CURWENSVILLE – The on again, off again, weather interrupted season for Curwensville High School’s softball team was “on” Monday afternoon as the Lady Tide made quick work of Harmony in a Moshannon Valley League game at Curwensville. Curwensville only needed 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win, 10-0, to run their record to 3-1.
Stacey Johnson, a sophomore, took her turn on the mound for the Lady Tide and did a great job in throwing a one hit, shutout. In her first assignment hurling, Johnson did walk five batters but the Lady Owls couldn’t cash in any for runs.
Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey said afterwards, “Stacey (Johnson) pitched very well her first time out. It really helps us out because that gave Lansberry (Holly) a rest today.”
Lady Tide shortstop Shannon McDonald had a big day at the plate, stroking a first inning homer, a solo shot, well over the left center field fence and a third inning triple in the gap to right center.
Leigey talked about his junior shortstop, “McDonald (Shannon) was hitting lights out this afternoon. She was just in one of those zones were she was making great contact every time up.”
Lansberry, Jenessa Stiles, Johnson and Tess Bloom all banged out two hits apiece to pace the Curwensville offense. Lansberry drove in three runs while Ashley Demchak knocked in two. Bloom, sophomore centerfielder, crossed home plate three times for the Lady Tide. Harmony’s lone hit was a single from their catcher, Megan Brink.
The Curwensville girls did most of their damage in the second inning when they tallied four runs and then put three more up in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead after three innings.
The Lady Tide return to their home field Tuesday as they welcome in the Lady Warriors of West Branch. Game time is set for 4:15 pm.
