Lady Bisons Lose 53-38 to Once-Beaten ECC

ST. MARYS – Once-beaten Elk County Catholic scored the first 10 points, led 30-10 at the half and went on to beat the Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team 53-38 Wednesday night to stretch its winning streak to 11 and maintain a one-game lead in the District 9 League.
 
Amber Byerly scored 15 points for the Lady Bisons, who suffered their fourth consecutive loss and 11th in 12 games. They are 1-9 in the league and 5-15 overall.
 
Three players hit double figures as the Lady Crusaders, who already have wrapped up the Allegheny Mountain League North Division title with a 10-0 record, remained unbeaten in the D-9 League after nine games. Kaitlyn Geci netted 16 points, while Bre Grimone and Emily Detsch chipped in 13 and 12, respectively.
 
ECC (20-1) can clinch the D-9 League crown with a victory over second-place St. Marys Saturday afternoon. The cross-town rivals have split two games this season, with the Lady Crusaders\’ lone loss (57-43) coming in the Elk County Holiday Tournament finals against the Lady Dutch.
 
Detsch scored eight of ECC\’s 10 points in the first quarter before Byerly got Clearfield\’s first points.
 
Leading by eight midway through the second period, the Lady Crusaders posted the next eight points to go up 22-6 with 2:38 left in the half.
 
After ECC made it 33-10 at the outset of the third period, Clearfield rebounded to outscore the hosts 16-6 and trail 39-26 going to the final eight minutes.
 
However, the Lady Crusaders converted two turnovers into field goals and remained comfortably in front down the stretch.
 
The Lady Bisons will be back home Friday to play Bradford.
 
In the prelim, the Clearfield jayvees lost 39-26. Lori Zalno scored 15 points for the Lady Bisons.
