Lady Dutch Turn Back Lady Bisons 55-47

ST. MARYS – Gina Pelgrin scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while freshman Kayla Ho\’ohuli turned in another outstanding all-around game against Clearfield to lead once-beaten St. Marys to a hard-earned 55-47 District 9 League victory in scholastic girls basketball action at the \”Dutch Oven\” Tuesday night.
 
Ho\’ohuli, who keyed the Lady Dutch\’s 61-53 win at Clearfield on Dec. 12 with 33 points, sparkled with 15 points, eight assists, five steals, six rebounds and three blocked shots. She is the leading pointmaker in District 9 with 371, a 21.8 average.
 
St. Marys, which started the season with 12 consecutive wins, remained one game behind Elk County Catholic in the D-9 League chase at 6-1 with its 16th victory.
 
Amber Byerly netted 14 points and Alanna Luzier and Elizabeth Peters added 11 apiece for Clearfield, which tumbled to 1-6 in the league and 4-11 overall with its sixth loss in a row.
 
St. Marys broke a 4-4 tie with six points and went on to open a 12-point lead (27-15) in the second quarter before taking a 30-22 advantage into halftime.
 
Coach Joey Castagnolo\’s Lady Bisons made a run early in the third period and overtook the Lady Dutch, 34-33, with 4:10 left by scoring seven points in a row.
 
However, the hosts\’ 10-2 run made it 43-36 going the final quarter, and the Lady Bisons never got closer than 47-42 with 3:55 to play.
 
Clearfield gets the rest of the week to regroup for three home games next week, Monday against Ridgway, Wednesday against Punxsutawney and Friday against Brookville.
 
In the junior varsity game, the Lady Bisons came from behind in the second half to win 25-20 with Byerly and Gwenn Porter scoring eight points apiece.
