Fourth Quarter Run Leads to Bison Victory

Hyde–Coming into Wednesday night\’s game against the St. Marys Flying Dutch the Bisons knew they could not afford to lose another District 9 League Game.  Fortunately for the Bisons they used a mix of strong passing, aggressive drives, and silky shooting from outside the arc to come away with a 50-35 victory.

The Bisons came out ready to play from the start jumping out to an early five point lead on baskets from Jarrin Campman and Matt Shiner.  Campman and Shiner would have the hot hands for the Bisons throughout the game scoring 12 and 15 points respectively, Shiner would net nine points in the first quarter.  At the end of the first period the Bisons led the Dutch 13-8.

In the second quarter Clearfield continued to slowly separate themselves from the Dutch with key baskets from Todd Hryn and Campman who combined to score nine of the eleven points the Bisons posted in the quarter.  The Bisons limited the cold shooting Dutch to only seven points in the quarter and were able to force a handful of turnovers.  The Bisons headed into the half with a 24-15 lead.

\”We didn\’t play bad defense tonight, but it seemed like there was a lid on the rim when they tried to shoot.  They got a lot of good looks in the first half, but luckily for us they didn\’t make them.  I can\’t really badtalk our defense though because we stepped it up late in the game and we held all of their scorers under their average,\” commented Coach Campman on his teams defensive play.

The Bisons came out in the second half perhaps a little too comfortable with their nine point lead and soon squandered it away as the Dutch were able to narrow the gap to as many as three points.  The Bisons had trouble recovering in the quarter, but still led 33-28 at the end of the third period.

In the fourth the Bisons got back in a groove turning on the pressure defensively and forcing turnovers and turning them into easy transition buckets.  Clearfield started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run before a timeout just minutes into the quarter.  The timeout didn\’t phase the Bisons as they continued to convert easy baskets with Joel Fox putting the final nail in the coffin with a layup to put Clearfield up 50-35.

\”We used that big run at the begining of the fourth quarter to win the game.  Those three minutes won the game for us;  it was the best we played all night.  That\’s a funny thing about our team though is we can play below average most of the game, then just have that spurt where we play like what we know we are capable of,\” said Coach Campman on the late game heroics.

The Bisons were able to get great minutes from their bench, and as seen throughout the season the Bisons only play as well as their bench allows them to.

\”I thought our bench played really well tonight.  They were able to go in there and maintain the lead and even build on it some.  David Ryan came in as the third guard tonight and played really well.  Nate (Greenland) and Joel (Fox) have also played their best two games back to back and that really helps us,\” commented Coach Campman.

The Bisons will be back in action Friday night when they take on rival Curwensville at home.  Coach Campman had this to say on the upcoming game, \”This is a big game, because we played them early in the season at their place and had to fight and claw to come out with a one point win.  I\’m sure the kids are excited and hopefully we continue to play well. I know it will be a good game.\”
