CLEARFIELD – It’s a call you never see in the NBA or even in college hoops. Games are never, ever decided this way. However, Wednesday night the Clearfield Lady Bisons tasted the bitterest kind of defeat possible as they lost at home to the DuBois Lady Beavers on a very questionable foul as time expired.
Sophomore Elizabeth Peters put the Lady Bisons up 55-54 with a lay-up and also drew a foul. After Peters missed the free throw and the ball went out of bounds, the Lady Beavers took over under the Clearfield bucket with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. DuBois threw a court length pass up the right sideline that was tipped by Sarah Kovalick of Clearfield and Samantha Deter of DuBois. The two scrambled with Kovalick and Deter bumping into each other for the loose ball. Deter hit the floor and \”toot-toot\” goes the referee\’s whistle. Foul on Kovalick as time expires! One and one at the free throw line for Deter. The DuBois junior gets a bounce, a roll, and the drop through the net to tie the game at 55 each. As cool as a tray of ice cubes she swishes the next one and the Lady Beavers come away with a 56-55 victory.
A rightly distraught Clearfield head coach, Joey Castagnolo, said afterwards, “It was unfortunate the way the game ended. I feel it is humanly impossible to have the ball tipped, rolling and a foul called in 1.3 seconds.”
Castagnolo and his Lady Bisons are now 4-9 on the season while the Lady Beavers under first year coach Jeff Paulina move to 3-11.
DuBois came out very aggressive and the Lady Bisons came out just plain not in sync in the first period as the Beavers took a 12-6 opening quarter lead.
The second and third quarters were all Clearfield’s as they outscored the visitors 22-17 in the second and 14-8 in the third. Clearfield actually had an 11 point margin at one time in the third stanza only to see DuBois chip away in the fourth to pull out the win. The Lady Beavers held a 19-13 edge in the fourth and final period.
On the night DuBois was paced by Kirsten Wilcox and Rachel Hicks each scoring 12. Leah Wallock added 11 for the victors. DuBois shot only 10 of 26 from the free throw line.
Clearfield, playing without Madison Sopic (illness), was fueled by 15 from Peters. Peters was also a rebounding machine on both ends of the court pulling down well over double digits in that category.
Alanna Luzier and Angela Moore each chipped in with 11. Moore got the start in place of Sopic and promptly hit a trey of three’s on the evening. The Lady Bisons had two players foul out in the fourth quarter. Annie Janocko took a seat with 6:26 left while Amber Byerly joined her teammate with 3:32 to play in the contest.
Castagnolo also added, “ The girls played their hearts out. They played with a lot of emotion. They executed are out of bounds plays perfectly all night long. We just couldn’t ask for a better effort.”
The Clearfield JV’s upped their record to 6-7 under longtime coach Jerry Stewart in beating DuBois 33-30.
The Bisons are at home this Friday as they entertain the Lady Cardinals from DuBois Central Catholic. Junior Varsity action starts at 6 pm with the varsity game immediately following.
