Kane Keeps Lady Tide Winless 37-24

CURWENSVILLE—-The Kane Lady Wolves wasted no time in making sure Curwensville didn’t pick up their first win of the season at their expense. The visiting Lady Wolves came into Patton Hall Thursday night, (a very cold and wintry night), taking care of business in a 37-24 win over the Lady Tide. Kane now is 8-5 on the season, while the Lady Tide are 0-10. The Allegheny Mountain League (AML) game left Kane at 1-1 and Curwensville now at 0-3 in league play

The Tide played their second straight game without Hannah Walls due to being ill. Curwensville’s Alesia Bressler had her best game of the year leading the Lady Tide with 10 points and a bunch of rebounds on both ends of the court. Sophomore Tess Bloom who had 15 the night before at Glendale was held scoreless by a very tight, active and stingy Kane defense.

The Lady Wolves shot 28 free throws and made 17 while the Tide only had 4 attempts at the line making good on 3. The night before the Tide had 18 against the Lady Vikings.

Kane took a 10-4 lead into the second quarter but was outscored 8-7 to lead by five at the half, 17-12.

The second half, in particular the third quarter, did the home team in as the Wolves had a 13-6 advantage after the break to go up by twelve, 30-18 after three.

Junior Bree Bergman lead all players with 13 points, going 9 of 15 from the free throw stripe. Andrea Saquin helped out Kane with double digits of her own, pouring in 10. Curwensville senior Holly Fink chipped in with seven as only four Lady Tide scored on the evening.

Curwensville coach Vic Gearhart said afterwards, “That was our best defensive effort of the year by far. We really showed some defensive improvement tonight.” Gearhart then added, “Had we had the same kind of effort on the offensive end we could have pulled out a win.” Coach Gearhart noted that, “Some of the girls got valuable experience out front in handling the ball. Hopefully that will help us down the road.”

Kane made a complete sweep of the evening in defeating the Tide JV’s 37-15. Curwensville will next play at DuBois Central Catholic on Saturday night with the junior varsity starting at 6 pm and the varsity immediately following.
