Lady Bisons Drop BEA Tourney Consy to Mo Valley 66-47

WINGATE – Moshannon Valley outscored the Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team 22-9 in the fourth quarter to pull away to a 66-47 win in Friday night\’s consolation game of the Bald Eagle Area Holiday Tournament.

Bellefonte defeated Bald Eagle Area 87-37 for the championship.

Junior Kierstin Elder pumped in 28 points, including four three-pointers, while Jordan Cook and Taylor Murarik chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively, as Moshannon Valley climbed to 5-3, matching last season\’s win total.

Clearfield also had three players in double figures, Jayme Ryan and Madison Sopic with 13 points each and Alanna Luzier with 10. Sopic was named to the all-tournament team after hitting her career-high scoring output.

The Lady Bisons, now 4-7, fell behind early in the first quarter and never caught the Damsels. A Clearfield field goal at the outset of the final period made it a 44-40 game, but Mo Valley went on a run to pretty much seal the outcome.

\”My posts (Elizabeth Peters and Amber Byerly) fouled out, and we couldn\’t stop them inside,\” Lady Bison coach Joey Castagnolo said.

The Lady Bisons also were without Annie Janocko in the second half. The junior post player, injured in Thursday night\’s loss to BEA, was unable to return after going to the bench early in the second quarter.

\”We missed her,\” Castagnolo said. \”Annie\’s a leader out there on defense. She kind of directs the other girls.\”

Foul shooting again was a problem for the Lady Bisons, who were only 13-for-29, including six misses in eight shots while falling behind 15-7 in the first quarter.

\”It looks bad, but the final score doesn\’t indicate how close it was,\” added Castagnolo, who has one week to regroup the Lady Bisons before their annual trek to Bradford for an important District 9 League game.

The Clearfield junior varsity, led by Sarah Kovalick\’s 12 points, salvaged a split in the tourney with a 40-16 victory over Moshannon Valley.
