Shiner Stars in Win over Brookville

Clearfield — Matt Shiner scored a career high 32 points and Clearfield put together numerous runs in the first half to come away with yet another D9 League win against Brookville Friday night. For the second straight game Clearfield did not trail by a single point and maintained the lead for 32 minutes.

The Bisons were able to start the game on a 9-0 run, which was ended by a Joe Galbraith of Brookville reverse lay-up. Clearfield was able to go on another 9-3 run on the back of Matt Shiner to end the first quarter with an 18-5 lead. The second quarter also contained a lot of scoring. Galbraith closed out the half for Brookville by hitting a 3 pointer to make the score 35-21. In the third quarter Brookville started their own 8-0 run, which was broken by a pair of Jarrin Campman foul shots. Brookville was able to close the gap to 48-44 by the end of the period. To begin the fourth the Bisons were able to string together another 7-0 run, once again due to the hot shooting of Shiner, which allowed them to come out on top 69-55.

“Tonight was a great win because we are 3-0 in District 9, and this is the first time since I’ve been the coach here that we have been first place in the league heading into the New Year. If you were watching the game though, you saw we still had a lot of problems and made a million mistakes tonight. Everybody other than Matt (Shiner) played below average. So that made tonight’s game a great win because we were able to pull it out,” Commented Coach Campman on the victory.

Matt Shiner was able to light up the scoreboard Friday night and continue to establish himself as one of the top scorers in the area. Campman had this to say on his junior forward “Matt Shiner played a good game he had 32 points, but I can’t say he played great because he had too many turnovers and mistakes to say he played great. But that’s the most points a player has scored in a game since Phil Moore had 31 during my first season as head coach. Matt is undoubtedly the best shooter I have ever had, he makes shots. But for him to become an elite player in District 9 he needs to cut down his turnovers, but he’s still a good player. We wouldn’t win without his scoring.”

Coach Campman got great bench production once again in the first half Friday night. “I though both Nate (Greenland) and Cruise (Kerr) gave us great production in the first half, but then struggled in the second half. We need them to keep up that first half production. It definitely hurt us not having David Ryan, who missed the game due to a death in the family, because he comes in and gives us good minutes at the guard position and gives the other guys a break,” said Campman.

Clearfield will look to pick up another win on this Tuesday the 18th when they travel to District 6 opponent Bald Eagle Area. Tip-off for the Varsity game is scheduled for 7.
