CLEARFIELD – Fair time can be pretty crazy sometimes. And so can some of the food that’s there.
Last year the News Team had an idea (some might say crazy). We wanted to try new and different foods at the Clearfield County Fair and report them to you, our readers. These foods are not staples like fair lemonade or gyro’s. Some might become fair staples, some might not make it through the entire week.
The News Team put our taste buds to the test and went to four booths and tried four distinct foods. We then rated them on a four-star system.
Granted, these are our opinions. Don’t let our say-so be the final word. Head on over to the Clearfield County Fair and give the foods a try yourself!
So without without further ado, here are the fun fair foods that we tried this year.
Spaghetti Ice Cream
Located at Becky’s Soft Serve near the David H. Litz Grove Stage. Don’t let the name fool you. It’s not spaghetti, really.
Well, at least not a pasta form of spaghetti. This is soft-serve vanilla ice cream pushed through a potato ricer to make the ice cream appear like spaghetti. It’s then topped with strawberry sauce and strawberries (red sauce and tomatoes), three Whoppers (meatballs) and shaved white chocolate on top (parmesean cheese). A plate of Spaghetti Ice Cream costs $4.
Aaron: It’s an strawberry sundae with a twist. The idea is neat, and it’s executed well. Visually, it was cool. Two-and-a-half stars out of four.
Dawn: The special “meatballs” were great (Can you tell I’m a chocolate freak?). I agree that it definitely sounds weird, but give this one a try! Two stars out of four.
Pork Chop on a Stick
Located at an unnamed booth near the grandstand. It is what is says, a Porkchop on a Stick. The cost of a pork chop on a stick is $4 or $5 for a basket that includes fries.
Aaron: Well, it’s a porkchop on a stick. It came out a chaffing pan full of water and was slapped down on a grill that wasn’t on. It was cold. Tender, but cold. And plain. No stars.
Dawn: Tender I’ll give you, but that’s about it. There was this wonderful aroma that wafted from the grill when the chop was first put on, but the aroma must have been coming from somewhere else. It wasn’t the pork chop. Half a star for the tenderness.
Walking Taco
Located near midway at a stand operated by Bates Bros. Amusements. A bag of Doritos or Fritos opened and filled with lettuce, tomatoes, warm taco meat, cheese, salsa and sour cream. A Walking Taco costs $3.
Aaron: Awesome. This is just cool. You can walk around and eat it straight from the bag. We opted for Fritos. The salty Fritos really worked well with the taco filling. Four stars out of four.
Dawn: This is perhaps the neatest idea I’ve seen in a long time. It’s self-contained, it’s kitschy and IT’S A TACO. What more could you want? Great as a snack, too. Three and a half stars out of four.
Deep Fried Pepsi
Located at Bailey’s, near the Mill Road entrance. Funnel cake batter topped with sugar and some sort of Pepsi sauce. Deep Fried Pepsi costs $4 plain or $5 with fruit. We went without fruit.
Aaron: This was interesting. It was hard to put a name to the flavor that it had. It’s a cool idea, and innovative, and that’s what fair food’s all about. Two stars out of four.
Dawn: Definitely hot and fluffy but I still can’t put my finger on what the flavor of it was. I think I might have to try this one with fruit. Two stars out of four.
While this is not, by any means, an exhaustive list of fair fare, remember to try something new while you revisit old favorites at the Clearfield County Fair.
