CURWENSVILLE – Punxsutawney clinched the VFW Teener Area VI 13-and-14 Tournament championship by defeating the Curwensville All-Stars 19-1 in five innings at the Curwensville Area High School Field Wednesday evening.
Punxsy is 3-0 with one game remaining, tonight\’s completion of its opener at Philipsburg-Osceola (1-2) that was suspended because of rain in the top of the second inning with no score.
Curwensville, which finished 1-3, solved Brodi Lowmaster for five hits, two by Eric Little. Todd Munchak drove in the lone run for manager Nick Redden\’s team.
Lowmaster, a left-hander, struck out five and walked four.
He had plenty of support, as his teammates pounded 14 singles off four Curwensville pitchers, who walked 14 batters and hit four. Starter Andrew Redden took the loss.
Braedon Pennington led the winners by driving in five runs with three hits and a sacrifice fly.
Spencer Levy also had three hits, while Jordan Mesoraco had three RBIs.
Tyler Skerkavich and Taylor Neal checked in with pairs of hits and ribbies, and Zack Dickey also drove in two runs.
Punxsy batted around in the first, third and fifth innings in scoring all their runs. The visitors sent 16 batters to the plate in the third when they tallied 10 runs.
Both centerfielders made spectacular backhanded catches in the first inning, Curwensville\’s Alex Holland sprinting into left center to rob Zack Dickey for the final out with the bases loaded and Punxsy\’s Pennington dashing into right center for a diving grab that deprived Garrett LaBorde of extra bases.
