HESSTON, PA – Rance Garlock (limited late models) and Lou Wannayn (hobby stocks) picked up their first feature wins of the season on Saturday night at Hesston Speedway on Lias Racing Tire Trophy night.
Repeat winners included Randy Kaylor in the PA 305 Sprints and Bill Henney in the street stocks.
The late models saw Chad Walters and Justin Kann on the front row, and it was Kann taking the lead and setting the pace into the first turn. A quick caution saw Scott Palmer out of action for the night. Kann continued to set the pace and hold on through three more caution before the halfway mark.
On lap 10 Rance Garlock started making his move around the leader and took the top spot one lap later off turn four. Once out front he had to contend with the new second place driver, Tim Smith Jr. While Garlock was trying to fend off Smith, Derek Byler was headed to the front from 14th, by working the outside groove, but it was Garlock taking the win ahead of Smith, Kann, Mike Altobelli from eighth and Byler. Heat wins went to Scott Palmer and Tim Smith Jr.
Randy Kaylor and Tom Worrick led the sprints to the start with Kaylor taking the lead and sailing to his own zip code. As he was leading the way the fight for second was heating up, with Worrick trying to hold off Andy Haus and Roger Irvine, When Gary Deem waved the checkered flag it was Kaylor taking the win ahead of Worrick, Irvine, Brian Sweitzer and Haus. The heats were won by Rod Ort, George Riden and Roger Irvine.
Dave Brown and Bill Henney led the street stocks to the green with them running door-to-door at the start for the first two laps before Henney secured the lead. While he led Khi Swanger was trying his best to get to the front. Like Byler in the late models, Swanger was working the outside and made it to second with one lap to go, but the caution waved, regrouping the field. As the two lap shoot-out took place, Swanger had one last shot at getting the win, he went to the low side of Henney but came up about a half a car short at the line. The top five were: Henney, Swanger, Cris Edwards Jr., Bill Heffner and Brown. The heats were won by Dave Brown and Bill Henney.
Lou Wannayn and Jeff Shoemaker led the hobby feature to the green with Wannayn taking the lead and maintaining it from flag-to-flag, but his win wasn’t easy, as he had to contend with a host of driver trying to get the lead, with Charlie Walters second most of the race, but he lost second late in the race. Bill Replogle then took over trying to get the lead, but Wannayn held on for the first victory of his career at Hesston. Replogle, Joe Dearmitt, Keith Russell and Joe Hammers completed the top five. Heat wins went to Curtis Heath and Keith Russell.
