Legion Baseball: Clearfield Falls Victim to Brookville Comeback

HYDE – Brookville scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to hand Clearfield an 11-8 Jefferson County Legion Baseball League setback at the Bison Sports Complex Wednesday evening.

Each team held the lead twice before the Laurel Eye Clinic team took advantage of four walks and two Chiefs\’ errors to even its record at 4-4.

Jacob Nunley\’s two-run single, which provided the insurance runs, was the lone hit of the inning.

Clearfield, which dipped under .500 at 4-5 in the JCLL, trailed 2-0 in the third when Chris Barr and Wil Bacharach singled and James Zimmerman cracked a three-run home run over the left center fence. A walk, a wild pitch, an error and Aaron Sayers\’ RBI-single made it 5-2.

Brookville answered with four runs in the fourth, two on Nunley\’s first hit, but the Chiefs regained the lead at 7-6 in the fifth on Corey Bookhamer\’s run-scoring single and Barr\’s groundout with the bases loaded. Zimmerman\’s double, a sacrifice bunt and Campman\’s groundout produced another run in the sixth.

Nunley was the beneficiary of the visitors\’ comeback in the seventh. He gave up one run and one hit while striking out two in two innings after relieving Jacob Means.

Gabe Wonderling belted a double and a triple while Greg Sobol homered and singled for Brookville.

Michael Moyer, who pitched the first five innings, took the loss after returning to the mound in the seventh when Sayers was unable to continue pitching because of a sore arm. They combined for nine strikeouts but issued 12 walks and allowed eight hits.

Eight of Brookville\’s runs were unearned, though, due to six of Clearfield\’s seven errors.

Zimmerman\’s two extra base blows and Barr\’s two singles paced the Chiefs.
