Cville BB: Golden Tide Sweep Harmony 17-6 and 14-2

CURWENSVILLE—-The Curwensville Golden Tide crossed home plate 31 times Monday afternoon in sweeping a doubleheader from the Harmony Owls. The first game was shortened after 4 ½ innings due to the mercy rule 17-6. In the second game Harmony was actually the home team, but that didn’t matter at all, as the Tide cruised again 14-2. With the twin wins Curwensville now stands at 13-5 on the year under head coach Ryan Briskar who said afterwards, “One win a day is great, but being able to bring home two is really sweet. The guys really had the offense going today with Jesse Hoover having a monster day at the plate for us in game two. Hoover has being working hard and it really is paying off.” Briskar also added, “It was very nice to be able to get several young players in both games to get some varsity experience.” Curwensville finishes Moshannon Valley League play with a perfect 8-0 record and now awaits the District 9 pairings which will be coming out sometime today.

In the opening game the Tide scored runs in bunches by picking up 6 in the first, 4 each in the second and third, then throwing in 3 for good measure in the fourth. Harmony did get offensive in the fourth by scoring 6 times, but by then the game was already out of hand for the visiting Owls.

Leading the way in the first game for Curwensville was Nate McGary who went two for three with 2 RBI’s and Derek Dixon going 2 for 2 and driving in 5 runs. Dixon and Joe Bloom each had a double for the Tide. Jesse Hoover and Brandon Hess brought home two runs each in the Tide slugfest. In all Curwensville had twelve hits along with 6 base on balls to fuel the offense. Nate McGary picked up the win for the Tide in relief of Brett McCracken after the Tide put those 6 first inning runs on the scoreboard. Pitcher Evan Hutton had two hits and Daran Peace stroked a double for the Owls who fell to 1-5 in the Moshannon Valley League and 2-11 overall after the double defeat.

In the nightcap it was all about sophomore Jesse Hoover, as the shortstop went 3 for 3 with a triple and a two run seventh inning home run that propelled the Tide to victory. Ben McGary, Brett McCracken, Trevor Horton and Brandon Hess all had two hits for Curwensville. Horton and Ben McGary had doubles, while Hess smacked a triple. Mark Dellantonio, Hess, Brett McCracken all drove in two runs along with Hoover. Justin McGary went six innings to garner the win for the Golden Tide and struck out 11 Owls along the way. Steven Williams had two hits for Harmony, with one being a double. Nathan Brothers was tagged with the loss for the Owls.

Curwensville didn’t really take control of game two until they scored 4 in the top half of the third then added nine more over the final four innings to seal the victory. Curwensville had 14 hits in the second game and was helped along the way with five errors from Harmony.

The Tide travel to DuBois to battle DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) this afternoon for a 4:15 game. DCC won the first game back on April 18th, 6-5.
