Campus Corner: Baughman Earns 2nd Win For Geneva

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Junior lefthander Brandon Baughman of Clearfield picked up his second win for the Geneva College baseball team Saturday as the Golden Tornadoes capped a 5-2 week with an 11-1 and 13-1 sweep of host Myers University.

Baughman hurled a six-inning three-hitter with five strikeouts and only one walk.

The run he allowed was unearned, lowering his earned run average to 3.67

For the season, Baughman is 2-3 in five starts. In 26-2/3 innings, he has struck out 21 batters while giving up 32 hits, 21 runs, 14 earned runs and 12 walks. Baughman has steadily dropped his ERA since giving up 10 hits and 11 runs, all but one earned, in just 2-2/3 innings against Southeastern (Fla.) in Tennessee on Feb. 24.

Geneva, 14-12 after Monday\’s 10-5 loss to Alderson-Broaddus, moved up one spot to No. 5 in this week\’s NAIA Division I Region IX rankings.

Baughman was 3-4 in 10 games last year, working 36-2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts and 23 walks. He surrendered 50 hits and 26 earned runs for a 6.38 ERA.

BRADFORD, Pa. — Freshman infielder Bart McGary of Curwensville had four hits in six at-bats to help the Pitt-Bradford diamond team to two of its five victories last week.

In his third start at third base, McGary went 3-for-5 and scored two runs in the nightcap as the Panthers swept host Allegheny College 7-0 and 7-6.

On Saturday, he had a key pinch-hit single to set up the winning run in the seventh inning of the opener of the Panthers\’ 6-5 and 4-3 sweep of Pitt-Greensburg in their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference openers.

Pitt-Bradford (12-3), picked by the coaches to finish second behind Frostburg State in the AMCC, it tied for first place with Frostburg (14-9, 3-1) and Penn State-Altoona (7-9, 3-1).

In 10 games this season, McGary is hitting .467 with seven safeties, one a double, in 15 at-bats. He has scored six runs and driven in one. He has walked twice and been hit once, with one steal in one attempt.

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Junior Andrew Kirsch of Clearfield was hitless in three at-bats in the lone game he played for Seton Hill College last week.

He started at second base in the second game of a doubleheader against Clarion University, a 1-0 win 10 innings.

Kirsch has started 11 games and played in three others. His batting average is .275 (11-for-40), and he has three doubles, two home runs and 10 runs batted in.

The Griffins raised their record to 19-8 with four wins in six games last week.

WHEELING, W.Va. — Rebecca Shiner of Clearfield was a member of the Westminster College women\’s 4×400-meter relay team that qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Track and Field Championships with a 4:06.24 time that was good for third place in the Bill Van Horne Invitational hosted by Wheeling Jesuit University Saturday.

The sophomore middle distance runner teamed with Abby Basta, Kristen Van Sickel and Sara Calderone.

Shiner also finished third in the 800-meter run in 2:26.35, the school\’s best time of the outdoor season, to help the Titans earn third place among the nine teams.

CHARLOTTE, Va. — Slippery Rock University\’s Nate Shadeck of Frenchville finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Charlotte Track & Field Invitational hosted by University of North Carolina-Charlotte on Saturday.

A Clearfield Area High School graduate, Shadeck finished in 54.48 seconds, bettering the 55.35 he posted in his win at the California (Pa.) Early Bird Invitational the previous week.
