Bisons Lose Opener to Virginia Foe, 8-2

NORFOLK, Va. — The Clearfield Area High School baseball team was held to six hits by Maury standout Karter Recpa and dropped its season opener 8-2 Saturday afternoon.

Adam Jury had two hits, including an RBI-triple that put the Bisons on top 1-0 in the third inning.

\”Our hitting definitely is not where we want it to be, but part of that is the lack of outside activity and live pitching, plus we ran into a good, experienced pitcher,\” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said. \”But I think it will come along and we\’ll be okay there.\”

Recpa, a 6-3 lefthander, struck out seven Bisons and walked only one in his second start of the week.

\”He\’s their ace,\” Lansberry said. \”He wasn\’t super, but he had good control and did a good job against us. Their coach told me they are loaded this year.\”

Maury (3-1) answered with three runs in the bottom of the third against Brandon Evans, who was lifted by Lansberry after four innings. The senior righthander struck out six and walked four, allowing four hits and two earned runs.

\”He didn\’t pitch that badly,\” Lansberry said. \”I wasn\’t upset at all, but he was close to 90 pitches and the score was 4-1. It was crazy to leave him in any longer this early in the season.\”

Senior southpaw Andrew Janocko relieved and surrendered five hits and four runs, two earned, in two innings.

Clearfield added its second run in the seventh when Drew Hipps singled and scored on James Zimmerman\’s double.

Lansberry, beginning his 36th season as Bison coach, was just happy to get his squad on to a dry field all week.

\”We got a lot done in four days with the best weather we\’ve had in many years done there,\” he said. \”We had a lot of good practices, a couple of scrimmages and the game. We were outside one day before we left, and that was on the old football field at the Driving Park.\”

The annual trip didn\’t produce all the results Lansberry had hoped for, however.

\”Everybody got a look and opportunities to show what they can do, but some of the question marks we had have not been answered yet,\” he said. \”The lineup we had Saturday is quite a bit different than what we had anticipated going down there.\”

Jury, slated to anchor the infield at shortstop, was moved behind the plate, with Zimmerman shifting from second base to short. Kyle Kline, pegged to hold down first base, played third base. Two sophomores got the nod on the right side of the infield, Michael Moyer at first and Jarrin Campman at second.

\”It looks like it will be a while before we have a set lineup,\” Lansberry added. \”After the game, I told the kids nobody is out of the running. There\’s still some changes to be made.

\”The big thing right now is getting people in the right positions. We\’ve got to make some decisions on who should play where.\”

The Bisons are scheduled to begin Central Penn League play with home games against Bellefonte Tuesday and Lewistown Friday.
