Only 3 Bisons Alive After Day One at NW AAA Regionals

ALTOONA — Luck wasn’t on the Bisons’ side Friday night, as only three wrestlers survived the opening rounds of the Class AAA Northwest Regional Championships at the Altoona Fieldhouse.

Holden Lowe (119), Jake Riglin (171) and Sean Owen (285) will compete today in the tournament‘s consolation bracket.

Lowe (So., 12-9) opened up the 119-pound bracket with a 2-0 win over Steve Rothstein (Alderdice, Fr., 12-4), before getting teched by Cyrus Parlin (General McClane, Jr., 31-8) 16-0 in the quarter-finals.

Lowe dropped to the consolation bracket, where he defeated Mike Krysiak (Erie Strong Vincent, Fr., 24-12) 7-3.

With the score even at three, Lowe went to work on Krysiak in the final period. Lowe reversed Krysiak and picked up two near fall points to set the final.

Lowe will meet Colton Spade (Lewistown, Fr., 29-13) in the second round of consolation action.

At 171, Bison senior Jake Riglin (10-13) lost by fall to Ryan MacNamera (Bald Eagle Area, Sr., 23-7) in the opening round.

Riglin won by forfeit in the wrestle backs, while Travis Reed (St. Marys, Sr., 25-8) couldn’t compete due to injury.

Riglin will be back in action against Clay Steadman (General McClane, Sr., 21-3).

In the quarter-finals, heavyweight Sean Owen (So., 28-7) met Tim Watson (Bald Eagle Area, Jr., 24-7) in a re-match. The two squared off back in December when Owen defeated Watson by a 5-1 decision.

Watson used a headlock to take Owen to his back, stealing round two with a fall in 1:08.

However, Owen bounced back with a fall of his own, as he pinned Luke Bennett (DuBois, Jr., 15-14) in 1:28.

In the wrestle backs, Owen will face Travis Chappel (Titusville, Jr., 25-5) in a re-match. Owen and Chappel battled in the consolation finals at the Williamsport Top Hat Tournament.

Owen will seek revenge on Chappel, who took round one by a 5-2 score.

The semi-finals and the second consolation round are set for 12 p.m., with the third consolation round to follow at 2:30 p.m.

The consolation finals are slated for 5:30 p.m., while the Parade of Champions is set to begin at 6:15 p.m. The finals will follow at 6:30 p.m.
