Bison Swimmers Sweep St. Marys

ST. MARYS — The Clearfield Boy’s and Girl’s Swimming and Diving team swept host St. Marys for the second time this season.

The boys won by a score of 105-80, while the girls final read 120-63. The boys finished the season 11-1, while the girls stand at 8-4.

“For my boys, it was one of the best dual meets of the season,” said head swimming coach Jackie Morrison of the Bisons’ performance. “St. Marys has some outstanding swimmers, who are top in the league. My boys got pushed and really rose to the occasion. They had to. It was that close.”

In the boy’s dual, Clearfield had three individual winners, including Chris Bodle (200 free), Shay Flanagan (500 free) and Mark Krchnak (100 breaststroke).

According to Morrison, Flanagan played a vital role in the Bisons’ success. “Shay had an outstanding night and really rose to the occasion. He had a season best, close to a personal best, in the 500 free. He also led off the 400 free relay against one of their top swimmers. He really had a respectable performance.”

Brandon Boyer (50 and 100 free) and Logan Shirey (100 fly and breaststroke) added a pair of second place finishes, while Flanagan (200 IM), Tyler Shaw (one meter dive), Brady Mulhollem (500 free) and Chris Bodle (100 backstroke) also took second.

“Shay Flanagan, Brady Mulhollem and Jason Parks all had outstanding performances in the 500 free,” said Morrison. “All had career bests or close to it.”

Krchnak (200 free), John Bodle (200 IM and 100 fly), Justin DeCasper (50 and 100 free) and Steven Williams (one meter dive) finished third for the dual.

The boys scored a hat trick in team events, as the Bisons stole the 200 medley, 200 and 400 free relays.

On the girl’s side, Clearfield had three double winners, including Carolyn Shurer, Shelbie King and Chelsey Dufour.

Shurer won both distance events in the 200 and 500 free, while King took the 200 IM and 100 fly.

“Shelbie King had a great night with a career best in the 100 fly,” said Morrison. “She’s also been very consistent in the IM and on track to have a great post-season.”

Morrison was also impressed with Shurer’s performance when she said, “Carolyn Shurer had a career best in the 500 free. Her performance is right on track for this time of the season.”

Dufour won both the 50 free and 100 backstroke.

Other individual winners were Jennifer Williams (one meter dive), Marisa Howell (100 free) and Jaclyn Marsh (100 breaststroke).

Placing second for the Lady Bisons were Marsh (200 IM), Howell (50 free) and Allison White (100 breaststroke).

Branda Smeltzer (200 and 500 free), Amber Centi (one meter dive), Laura Lumadue (100 fly), Brandie Centi (100 free), Krista Massimino (100 backstroke) and Tessa Tkacik (100 breaststroke) took third.

In team events, the Lady Bisons won both the 200 medley and 200 free relays, while swimming exhibition in the 400 free. As a result, Clearfield received no team points.
