Clearfield Beaten 36-26 by St. Marys at D9 AAA Duals

DUBOIS — The Bison Wrestling team fell to St. Marys 36-26 yesterday in a re-match in the District 9 Team Duals semi-finals at the DuBois Area High School.

“We closed the gap,” said head wrestling coach Jeff Aveni of his team’s performance. “We were down two starters and still closed the gap. That shows the team’s improvement.”

The match started at 145 pounds where Jake Riglin faced Shane Krise in the first of eight re-matches.

Riglin defeated Krise 5-1 in the dual meet, and used a takedown, reversal and a set of near fall points to earn a 6-0 decision in round two.

Nick Redden and Sean Sadosky met in a re-match at 215 pounds. Although Redden came up short in a 3-1 loss, he still improved since the two met in the Jan. 23rd dual meet.

“I thought Nick Redden really closed the gap,” said Aveni. “He went from losing by fall in the dual meet to only a two-point loss.”

Heavyweight Sean Owen needed only 14 seconds to pin Dwayne Shaberal. Owen is the Bisons’ top performer with a 23-6 season record.

Zach Hoy and Steve Simchick won by forfeit at 103 and 112 pounds, respectively to put St. Marys on top 15-9.

At 119, Andrew Spicer pulled out a 4-3 decision over Frank Cousins to bring Clearfield within three.

However, St. Marys would extend their lead to 24-12 after a Dane Yetzer (125) decision and Derek McCullough (130) fall.

Clearfield would get six of those points back at 135 pounds, where Shawn Hall pinned Kyle Bish in 4:15.

“Shawn Hall got a big fall for us,” said Aveni. “I think he won by a major decision in the dual meet. We needed bonus points and he went out and got them. It’s a part of his maturing process, and was a major accomplishment for him.”

The fall marks Hall’s sixth consecutive win with four coming by fall. Hall is currently 10-11 on the season.

At 140, Anthony Moore and John Carr met for round two. Moore pulled out a 12-10 decision in the dual meet and would improve upon that performance.

Moore led 4-3 heading into the final period, where he went to work scoring a takedown and two sets of near fall points to get the 12-3 major decision.

The Bisons were down by two with four bouts remaining.

The 145 pound bout featured another re-match, pitting Richie Queen against Shane Claar.

Queen took round one by a 12-5 score, but would fall 10-5 in round two.

With a 2-1 lead at the end of one, Queen notched an escape, before Claar scored a takedown and two near fall points. Queen evened the score at five with a reversal.

The two went scoreless in the third to push the bout to overtime, where Claar took advantage of a failed mixer attempt by Queen, picking up a takedown, back points and the win.

Clearfield was penalized two team points for unsportsmanlike conduct on and off the mat.

At 152, Justin Brem pulled out a 9-4 decision to give St. Marys a double-digit lead, as the scoreboard read 30-20.

Bison Lee Zalno narrowed the margin, pinning Calvin Geer in 1:54 at 160 pounds.

“We got some nice wins out of Anthony Moore and Lee Zalno,” said Aveni. “Their wins really helped us close the gap. I thought they wrestled real well.”

However, Travis Reed notched a fall at 171 pounds to seal the win for St. Marys.

Clearfield is back in action Thursday when the Bisons host the Curwensville Golden Tide. The dual meet is set for 6:30 p.m.

“We got to see them [Curwensville],” said Aveni. “I’m not sure what to expect; it’s like a lottery. We’ll be down a couple guys, so well have to make up for that. Someone will wrestle better and hopefully it’s us.”
