Johnsonburg Tops Curwensville Boys 52-47

JOHNSONBURG—-Standout athlete Calvin Grumley led his Johnsonburg Rams to a five point win over the visiting Curwensville Golden Tide by scoring 16 points in the second half Friday night. The senior, who has scored over 2,000 career points, recorded a game high 25 in helping his team secure win number thirteen on the season.

For the Tide it was another tough loss in what has been a killer week. They lost to unbeaten Harmony on Monday night by two then once beaten DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) on Wednesday evening by ten. Next was the long trip on utterly horrendous, snow covered roads to Johnsonburg last night. And to make matters worse, Johnsonburg is the only team that beat DCC. Give the Tide a whole bunch of credit though. They could have easily folded their tents and quit. Coach Matt Wassil had his team as well prepared as anyone could have imagined and actually had a one point lead in the third quarter before the Rams pulled away. For awhile anyway.

Trailing 15-10 after one quarter and 24-22 at the half the Tide came out after intermission and battled the Rams until the last few minutes of the third period when Johnsonburg pulled away 40-29.

The fourth quarter saw the Tide put a lot of energy and heart into their game after such a tough week. Curwensville actually battled back to within four points in the final minute but the Johnsonburg boys hung on for the 52-47 win. It may be a loss in the “L” column for the Tide, but it surely was a big “W” in the morale department.

Zack Padasak chipped in with 17, 11 in the first quarter, for Johnsonburg. Curwensville had three men in double figures with Philip Michaels leading the way with 16. David Kalgren came off the bench to dump in 11 while Shawn Sopic netted 10.

Both teams were perfect form the charity stripe with the Rams going 8 for 8 and the Tide 4 for 4.

The Tide dropped to 10-9 on the season and next play at home Tuesday night against the Elkers of Ridgway.

Junior Varsity action saw Johnsonburg winning 59-48.
