Curwensville\’s Sipes Wins Tournament Crown

GROVE CITY — Curwensville Area High School senior Nick Sipes walked off with the 189-pound championship with three wins Saturday and three Golden Tide underclassmen placed in the 24th Annual Fred Bell Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Grove City High School.

Sipes defeated Sharpsville\’s Joe Joseph 6-1 in the title bout to improve his record to 19-2.

The other Golden Tide placewinners were freshman Derek Brothers, third at 103; sophomore Tyler Peters, fifth at 112, and soph Nathan Russell, sixth at 215.

In the consolation finals, Brothers edged Shawn Stanclif of Erie McDowell 6-4, Peters won by forfeit over Pat Gouin of Washington and Russell lost 4-0 to Kurt Ledebur of Titusville. Brothers had beaten Stanclif 16-7 and Peters had bested Gouin 5-1 in the quarterfinals Friday night.

Champion Jon Brothers (142) and runners-up in Nicholas McCauley (119), Jimmy McCauley (145) and Carter Dinger (215) led Redbank Valley to the team championship with 183 points, followed by seven District 10 teams. Curwensville finished ninth in the 23-team tourney with 102.5 points.

Franklin 145-pounder Nick Perrine was named Outstanding Wrestler after beating Jimmy McCauley 8-1.

Curwensville (4-3) returns to dual meet action Wednesday at Marion Center.
