FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Matt Kyler of Clearfield was one of eight Army
wrestlers to post wins in the Cadets\’ 32-6 non-conference victory over
Sacred Heart Wednesday night.
The freshman 141-pounder beat Cory Dunn 9-1 for his eighth major
decision of the season. His record is 23-6, 7-3 in dual meets.
Army is 8-3 for Sunday for Sunday\’s 2:30 p.m. home match that will be
broadcast live on ESPNU.

ERIE, Pa. — Former Clearfield Area High School matman Kyle Keane
started University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown\’s comeback from a 12-8
deficit as the Mountain Cats, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, swept
the final five bouts for a 26-12 victory at Gannon University
Wednesday night.
Keane defeated Anthony Petella 7-2 at 165 pounds to raise his record
to 6-2 in dual meets and 12-5 overall.

READING, Pa. — Susquehanna University failed to score in the final
4:55 and wound up losing 51-50 to Albright College when Annie McMahon
made two foul shots with 12 seconds remaining in the Commonwealth
Conference women\’s basketball game Wednesday night.
Clearfield native and DuBois Central Catholic High School graduate
Ruth Williamson scored nine points for the Crusaders, who missed their
final eight shots and were guilty of four turnovers after building a
50-45 lead. The sophomore guard also had five rebounds, four on the
offensive end, one assist and one steal. She had three turnovers.
The Crusaders, led by Jen Clark\’s 12 points, dipped to 3-4 in the
conference and 12-6 for the season.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — After an outstanding freshman indoor and
outdoor season, Westminster College middle distance runner Rebecca
Shiner of Clearfield already has broken her own Titan 800-meter indoor
record this season.
At the Marietta (Ohio) College First Glimpse Invitational on Dec. 9,
the former Clearfield Area High School cross-country and track
standout finished second in 2:32.44, bettering the 2:34.77 she posted
last winter.
She also ran a leg for the Titans\’ \’A\’ 4×200 relay team that placed fourth.
At the Oberlin (Ohio) College Lid Lifter last Friday, Shiner placed
sixth in the 1000 meters and 10th in the 500 and was on the
Westminster \’A\’ 4×400 relay foursome that finished second.
Shiner also is in the Westminster indoor record book with a 3:16.75
for the 1,000-meter run and as a member of the 800 and 1600 relay
teams. She teamed with Megan Hardin, Kristen VanSickel and Veronica
Geretz for a 1:53.39 in the 800 and with Harding, VanSickel and
Jessica Cooper for a 4:18.19 in the 1600.
After helping the Titans to a 3-2 record in the 2006 outdoor season,
Shiner contributed to their second-place finish behind Washington &
Jefferson in the Presidents\’ Athletic Conference Championships by
winning the 800 in 2:24.04, placing sixth in the 200 and running the
second leg for the 800 relay quartet that broke the school record with
a third-place finish. She teamed with Kate Kushner, Cooper and
VanSickel for a 4:06.10.
Shiner is one of four Westminster athletes featured on the cover of
the 2006-2007 Men\’s and Women\’s Cross Country/Track Media Guide.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo women\’s tennis team, coached
by 1996 Clearfield Area High School graduate Tracy (Honko) Mauntler,
opened their indoor season with a 7-0 win over Wright State Sunday.
The Rockets, coming of one of the best seasons in school history,
including a tie for fourth place with a 5-3 record in the Mid-American
Conference, swept the six singles matches, losing only 13 sets, and
won two of the three doubles matches.
Toledo, which has improved from 5-17 to 9-14 to 14-7 in three seasons
under Mauntler, has five returning regulars and a highly-regarded
quartet of freshmen. The Rockets were very successful in three fall
events, winning nearly 70 percent of their singles events.
Just this week, the UT athletic department announced that the women\’s
tennis team\’s 3.659 GPA for the 2006 fall semester was the highest of
the 16 Rocket athletic teams.
All nine players had at least a 3.0 GPA, with seven above 3.5. Some of
their majors are pre-law, biology, pre-med and political science.
\”In an extremely proud of the girls and this extraordinary academic
accomplishment,\” Mauntler said. \”They do a great job of balancing
their academics and responsibilities as a Division I athlete.\”
