Bison Wrestlers Fall to St. Marys, 38-26

HYDE — Bonus points made a difference in last night’s dual meet between Clearfield and St. Marys at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.

In fact, the Dutchman scored four pins and a technical fall en route a 38-26 win over the Bisons.

\”I can‘t say we had any flat out negative performances, but we had some things happen,\” said head coach Jeff Aveni. \”We can’t just go out and get pinned. We can’t get pinned in overtime and things like that. And, that’s a matter of fight. These guys still have to develop that fight and refuse to be pinned. That was the difference in tonight’s match – the falls.\”

The dual meet started at 145 pounds where Richie Queen got the Bisons on the board.

Queen hit a front head lock, taking Shane Claar to his back. Claar managed to escape and avoid the pin. Queen had a 5-1 lead at the end of one.

In the second Queen went back to work, using an escape and takedown to extend his lead over Claar, 8-1.

Claar picked up a reversal and takedown in the final period, but Queen notched two escapes and a takedown to secure a 12-5 decision win.

\”Richie Queen beat a quality opponent tonight in Shane Claar,\” said Aveni. \”I mean that’s a good kid. Richie Queen went out and was aggressive and stayed on him for six minutes and got a win over a good kid.\”

At 152, Doug Gisewhite took Vance Reider down four times in a 9-2 decision.

However, Justin Brem got the ball rolling for St. Marys, pinning Lee Zalno in overtime of the 160-pound bout.

Zalno took a 3-2 into the second period where he revered Brem, locking a cradle and three near fall points. Brem managed a reversal, but Zalno remained in control with an 8-4 lead.

Brem battled back in the third, reversing Zalno to his back. Zalno fought for a reversal to push the bout to OT, but Brem came away with the fall.

\”Zalno had a great performance right up until he got pinned,\” said Aveni. \”He wrestled a pretty decent kid. He had a lot a scoring opportunities and got a little sloppy, but I thought that was a good performance for him.\”

Bison Jacob Riglin won by a 5-1 decision over Shane Krise at 171 pounds, before St. Marys jumped out to an 18-9 lead with falls from Travis Reed and Sean Sadosky at 189 and 215 pounds, respectively.

Clearfield got six of those points back at heavyweight where Sean Owen needed only 15 seconds to pin Dwayne Schaberal.

Zach Hoy won by forfeit at 103 pounds to give St. Marys a 24-15 lead.

Although the teams split the remaining six bouts, the Dutchman scored more bonus points and the win.

At 112, Steve Simchick picked up a third period pin, while Derek McCullough added a technical fall at 130 pounds.

Dutchmen Dane Yetzer won by a 7-0 decision at 119 pounds.

The Bisons, on the other hand, earned major decisions from Jeff Smallwood and Shawn Hall at 125 and 135, respectively, while Anthony Moore pulled out a 12-10 win over John Carr.

\”Our best performance of the night was Shawn Hall,\” said Aveni. \”Shawn Hall didn’t want to let that kid up and take him down, but he did it anyway. He worked and worked and worked until he got bonus points, and scored some more after he did that. He built himself a cushion where he had the bonus and could go for a fall.\”

Clearfield is back in action Thursday night when the Bisons host Brookville. The meet is set for 6:30 p.m.
