Representative Urges Students to Apply for Financial Aid

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale, is urging college-bound, high school seniors or their parents to apply as soon as possible for student financial assistance.

“Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid — FAFSA — is the vital first step,” George said. “It is the critical application for all types of student aid, including federal Pell grants and the Pennsylvania State Grant.

George said waiting until the May 1 deadline to complete the FAFSA could jeopardize other financial opportunities, including academic scholarships available through colleges.

“No one can afford to miss any help available for a college education,” George said. “It’s regrettable but true that often financial aid goes to families who immerse themselves in the process rather than those with the greatest need.”

George also urged students or their parents to complete the FAFSA online. Online applicants will need a personal identification number available online to complete the FAFSA.

Paper applications are available by calling George’s Harrisburg office toll-free at 866-354-0890, or through school counselors.

“FAFSAs are being completed faster, safer and easier on the Internet,” George said. “Plus, you can use online tutorials and check the status of your application.”

George noted that it is recommended that federal income taxes be filed before the FAFSA.

“You can submit the FAFSA first using estimated tax and income information,” George said. “However, you will have to amend your application if the information is different from what you send the IRS.”

More college-assistance information, including on FAFSA Completion Days, the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Programs and the state Work-Study program, are available at the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Web site.
