Clearfield — You can usually get a pretty good read on a match by checking the final score. Last night\’s match against Punxsutawney is not one of those matches.
Sure Clearfield escaped with a 42-37 win, which is much better than a 42-37 loss. Reading the boxscore below tells a different tale though.
Punxsutawney head coach Eric Eddy was quoted in The Spirit regarding his team\’s anticipated forfeits saying, \” Going in with the 18-point deficit, our goal is to score more points on the mat, head to head.\” Well, despite actually forfeiting 4 classes and not 3 – mission accomplished. Punxsutawney outscored Clearfield 31-18 \”on the mat\”.
Clearfield managed only three wins on the night, all falls. The biggest turned out to be Jeff Smallwood\’s at 125. Smallwood was actually almost tossed to his back in the third period, but was not to be denied as he worked for a fall of his own.
The other two falls were of the first period variety by 112 pounder Andrew Spicer and heavyweight Sean Owen.
Clearfield\’s young squad, with six sophomores in the lineup, is sure to improve over the course of the season. There is some talent there. Hopefully it will peak come tournament time in February.
As for now, the Bisons have the unenviable task of traveling to Wingate to face Bald Eagle Area, a team that Clearfield hasn\’t beaten in the lifetime of any of the young Bisons. Perhaps this sophomore class will be the class that finally gets that elusive \”W\”. Probably won\’t happen Thursday though…
