OAKLAND, Cal. — Former Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School three-sport star Jon Condo, who lettered four years at the University of Maryland as a long snapper, is back in the National Football League.
According to a report by David White in the San Francisco Chronicle Thursday, Condo was signed by the Oakland Raiders for their practice squad this week after they promoted rookie center Chris Morris, a seventh-round draft pick from Michigan State, to replace long snapper Adam Treu for Sunday\’s game against Houston. Treu, who has played in all 155 games since the Raiders drafted him in 1997, was placed on season-ending injury reserve as a result of a quadriceps injury he suffered in Sunday\’s game at San Diego.
Condo signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent in 2005 but was cut after two games when placekicker Jose Cortez placed the blame for his kicking problems on the rookie long snapper.
Condo signed with New England on Jan. 30 of this year, but the Patriots utilized him mainly as a fill-in during summer sessions and the preseason camp when six-year veteran long snapper Lonie Paxton needed a break. The Patriots released Condo Aug. 22, but coach Bill Belichick, much like Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, encouraged the 6-3, 250-pounder not to give up on his dream of an NFL career.
