Township Officials Learn About Methamphetamine Production, Dangers

WEST DECATUR – Township officials from across Clearfield County joined in West Decatur at the Clearfield County Association Township Officials to discuss and learn about a number of items on Friday.

One the presentations they were given was on the production and dangers associated with the production of methamphetamines.

Cpl. James Basinger of the Pennsylvania State police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Clandestine Response Team provided the presentation. Basinger is one of six full-time troopers who are part of a 40-man team that respond to meth-related situations.

Basinger gave a brief history of the drug, as well as discussing the two ways it is made in Pennsylvania.

Basinger explained that the ingredients used to make meth can be purchased at local hardware, feed and department stores.

Ingredients that can be used in the production of meth are dangerous on their own or when mixed, according to Basinger.

“One of the things we’re worried about are toxic gases,” said Basinger.

Basinger warned against picking up unattended coolers or propane tanks found in areas where they would not normally be. Basinger noted that these containers may contain toxic chemicals or gases that could corrode the eyes and lungs.

“If you come across a propane tank in the woods, don’t assume it’s empty,” said Basinger.

“Don’t collect evidence. Leave it where it’s at,” warned Basinger. “Call the state or local police department.”

CCAOTO President Bill Lawhead noted that methamphetamine was a problem they were aware they should be aware of.

“We felt this was pretty pertinent,” said Lawhead.
