Volunteers Needed to Stock Trout

CLEARFIELD – The Old Town Sportsman’s Club will again be float stocking brown trout fingerlings in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.

Float stocking uses floating baskets transported in the river by canoes, kayaks and Johnboats.

Volunteers are needed to carry buckets of trout from the stock trucks down the riverbank to the waiting boats.

Spectators are always welcome.

The first stocking will be Sunday, and vounteers should meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Curwensville Football Field (Civic Center). (Organizers remind Steeler fans that there is no game on Sunday.)

Over 7,000 fingerling brown trout will be carried to the boats loading at different locations downriver from Curwensville. Stopping at Arnold Town Rails to Trails parking area, up river a quarter-mile from Porter’s Hog Back Bridge, Anderson Equipment and Bloom’s Electric. Boats will exit the river near Susquehanna Bridge.

The second will be Oct. 8 (the Steelers play a night game) at 10:30 a.m. at the mouth of Moose Creek across from Best Jewelers and WOK!W.

Over 6,000 fingerling brown trout will need to be carried to the boats. Stocking will begin at Moose Creek then move to the other side of the river.

Old Town Sportsman Club has permission for the day to access the river using the R.J. Corman road along the river behind CVS.

The boats will exit below the bypass bridge near Wolf Run.  Note that permission to access the river was granted to the Club by businesses and private property owners for the days of the stocking only.

This year total stocking of over 13,000 is more than double of the amount of trout stocked last November (6,000 total in 2005).

The Old Town Sportsman’s Club trout stocking is sponsored in part by Reliant Energy, the Shawville Power Plant, Curwensville Anglers Restocking Program, plus numerous organizations, businesses and individuals.
