Athlete of the Week — 9/18 – 9/24

With no shortage of candidates this past week in numerous sports, the winner this week was the most difficult choice thus far on the year.

Shawn Sopic, Curwensville\’s four year starter at quarterback, narrowly edges teammate Nick Sipes for this week\’s honor.

Down 14-8 at the half, Sopic led the Tide to a big second half comeback to blow out Cameron County with 38 consecutive points. Sopic rushed for 121 of his team high 146 yards and scored 2 touchdowns. He also added an interception to lead the Golden Tide defense.

Earning Honorable Mention this week is teammate Nick Sipes, who turned in his usual \”all-around\” effort.
How\’s 121 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns, 2 2-point conversions, 2 extra points, and a field goal? Nick is now in second place all-time rushing in D9.

Clearfield\’s Doug Kephart also deserves recognition for his career night receiving in the 21-17 win over Bellefonte. Kephart hauled in 6 passes for a whopping 157 yards. Included were 2 touchdowns of 36 yards.

2 local teams also deserve some recognition for their efforts this past week.

The Curwensville Volleyball team picked up their first win of the season in a 5 set win over rival Clearfield; a team that had won their previous 3 matches.

The Clearfield Girl\’s soccer team couldn\’t have had a better week. They went 2-0, outscoring their opponents 20-0!
