Korner\’s Football Notes From Week 3

CLEARFIELD — Clearfield Area High School quarterback Andrew Janocko and Clarion back Brad Rapp were selected by D9Sports.com to share District 9 Player of the Week honors for Week Three.

Janocko spurred the Bisons\’ thrilling 38-35 comeback win over Indian Valley Friday night by completing 20 of 28 passes for 276 yards and rushing for three touchdowns, while Rapp piled up 220 yards and two TDs on 25 carries and also caught one pass for 11 yards in Clarion\’s 15-6 victory at St. Marys.
Janocko\’s passing yards were eighth best among statewide statistics reported to the Pennsylvania Football News. No. 1 was a 449-yard performance by Rocco Colavecchia of Shenango. Another big game was turned in by Travis Rearick of Forest Hills with 312 yards.
Running back Nick Sipes of Curwensville and quarterbacks Calvin Grumley of Johnsonburg and Jake Smith of Redbank Valley were in contention for the Player of the Week Award but ended up on the Honor Roll. Sipes rushed for 247 yards, the fifth-best rushing total reported to the PFN, and two touchdowns against Brockway to earn Honor Roll recognition for the third week in a row, while Grumley passed for 178 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 71 yards and three touchdowns against Ridgway and Smith passed for 121 yards and ran for 99 yards and two TDs in a 48-26 win over Schenley.
Tight End Adam Jury and running back Isiah Morgan of Clearfield also made the Honor Roll. Jury, the Week Two Player of the Week, caught 13 passes for 164 yards and completed his only pass for 36 yards. Morgan carried 26 times for 100 yards and two TDs, including the game-winner with 1:22 left.
Jury\’s yardage was third on the PFN list for the week. Doug Kephart\’s 109 receiving yards tied for 24th.
        * * * * * * * * *                                                                                                            Tyrone, No. 7 in Class AA, is the only District 6 or 9 team ranked in the Top Ten in the Pennsylvania Football News football ratings.
The PFN \”Others To Watch\” teams include unbeatens Bradford (9) and Johnstown (6) in Class AAA, unbeaten Karns City (9) and 2-1 Bishop McCort (6), Forest Hills (6) and Penn Cambria (6) in Class AA and 3-0 Coudersport (9) and Portage (6) and 2-1 Bellwood-Antis (6) in Class A.
The Harrisburg Patriot News rankings also show Tyrone at No. 7, up from No. 10 last week. That newspaper\’s Honorable Mention teams included Bradford and 2-1 Huntingdon (6) in AAA, Karns City, Moniteau (9), Bishop McCort and Forest Hills in AA, and 3-0 Johnsonburg (9) 2-1 Curwensville (9), Bellwood-Antis and Portage (6) in A.

Wilmington, coached by Curwensville Joint High School graduate Terry Verrelli, remained undefeated after three games by turning back Grove City last week.
Clearfield Area High School grad Jacque DeMatteo\’s Shaler team fell to 2-1 with a 28-14 loss to Plum in WPIAL non-conference action.
