Police advise of mail scam

WEST DECATUR – If you have received a check in th mail reading “Bonanza 2000,” state police at Clearfield want you to know something before you head to the bank.

Police say that the information arrives via mail, stating that it is from the Australian International Lotto. Troopers advise that anyone who receives the check should contact the state attorney general if they would like to make a report.

The reports police have received to date have been from residents of the West Decatur area.

Reports from the state police state that as part of the scam, people are requested to call a telephone number to receive more information. They then ask the person to go to their own bank to cash the check. According to the letter, people are asked to keep a small amount of money and send back a larger amount of money back to the organization via money wire.

The state attorney general’s office can be found online at www.attorneygeneral.gov.
