Claysburg — The Curwensville Golden Tide (1-4) nearly pulled off the road upset Friday night against Claysburg-Kimmel (3-2) as they raced out to a 21-0 lead behind the arm of senior quarterback Tyler Dunn, but were held scoreless in the second half of a narrow 34-28 loss.
The Tide scored on their first two possessions to take a 14-0 first quarter lead.
Fist Dunn hit Cael Butler with a 57 yarder, with the second TD being a 33-yarder to Lincoln Hoyt. Everett Addleman tacked on both point afters.
The second quarter started out just like the first as Dunn went back to Butler for a 23 yard score to give the Tide a 21-0 lead after roughly 13 minutes of play.
However the Bulldogs came biting back as Mark Lattieri scored on a 1-yard plunge, followed by two long touchdown runs by quarterback Mason Campagna of 71 and 36 yards to even the score at 21.
The Tide struck back in lightning fashion as Dunn and Butler hooked up for their third TD combo of the half, this one a 67-yarder to give the Tide a 28-21 halftime lead.
Neither team managed to score in the third quarter as the visitors clung to the 7-point lead heading to the final 12 minutes of play.
Lattieri scored early in the fourth to bring the hosts back to even for the second time, 28-28.
Finally with about three minutes remaining in the game, Lattieri broke the ice with his third TD, but with the missed extra point, the Tide had one last opportunity to go for the win.
Unfortunately, the final drive went no where as the Tide turned the ball over on downs and the Bulldogs ran their win streak to three.
The Tide will be on the road again next Friday as the travel to Morrisdale to face the winless West Branch Warriors (0-5).
