Adult Day Services: Helping Individuals Age in Place

At Penn Highlands Adult Day Services, people enjoy many activities ranging from exercise and baking to puzzles and gardening.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines “Aging in Place” as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.” It would be safe to assume that most adults would prefer to age in place — to remain in their home for as long as possible. But oftentimes, challenges arise in our lives that make this goal difficult. One lesser known resource available for individuals wishing to live at home longer are Adult Day Programs.

According to the CDC, there are more than 4,100 Adult Day Services Centers across the U.S. that provide safe environments for adults to interact with others. Many Adult Day Services offer stimulating activities, showers and personal care, toileting assistance and health monitoring.

“Adult Day Services helps to give people a sense of purpose,” said Danielle Heilberger, COTA, Program Director at Penn Highlands Adult Day Services. “The act of getting up in the morning, getting dressed and going to the center is very therapeutic and gives people something to look forward to doing.”

She continued, “When advocating for someone who wishes to age in place but has dementia, an organic brain syndrome or other age-related physical or cognitive limitation, the concept of an Adult Day Program can be ideal because they are medically supervised and offer tailored activities”

While Adult Day Services is beneficial for older adults, it also provides their caregivers who work outside the home with peace of mind that their loved ones are being cared for properly in their absence. It also provides a respite for caregivers – giving them some free time for themselves.

Danielle pointed out that a common misconception regarding this service is that it is for individuals who cannot be left alone or are nursing home eligible. Although this is true, Adult Day Services Programs are also perfect for people wishing to age in place and just need a little extra support.

“Most people adapt rather quickly once they begin an Adult Day Services program,” said Danielle. “After coming a few times, everyone feels like family.”

Many older adults can find something they enjoy at Adult Day Services programs such as:
