Labor Day Weekend Programs Planned at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – Multiple programs have been planned at Parker Dam State Park over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Thursday, Aug. 29

Little Critters Story Time

10 a.m.—EE Classroom

Come join Park Naturalists for story time and a craft.  The stories and crafts will be centered around wildlife and nature.  Parents are encouraged to attend.  This week’s theme will be turtles.

Friday, Aug. 30

Wetland Walk

7 p.m.—Small side of lake near the concession building

Join our Park Intern Sallee for a wetland walk to learn the importance of wetlands to our local ecosystems. Afterwards you’ll know the difference between a wetland, a bog, and a fen and even be able to identify some of the plants that call these areas home.

Saturday, Aug. 31

Hike Beaver Dam Trail

9 a.m.—In front of Park Office

Meet in front of the park office to begin this three mile hike along the Beaver Dam Trail.  We will be exploring the plants, trees, and other life to be found along the trail.  Bring water and wear comfortable shoes.

What is a Woodhick?

6:30 p.m.—Field above cabin road

Well, it’s Woodhick Weekend again, but what is a Woodhick? Join Park Naturalist’s to explore what a day in the life of a Woodhick and a Cookee may have looked like here at Parker Dam. Learn why Woodhicks are relevant to Parker Dam and our regions history. Maybe even learn a tip or two on how to get an edge for the Annual Woodhick Games.

Sunday, Sept. 1

Woodhick Games

1 p.m.—Above Cabin Road

Registration opens at noon, with the competition beginning at 1 p.m.  All the usual events: log rolling, cross-cut sawing, and so on.  Vie for the coveted Woodhick (or Woodchick) of the Year by having the lowest score (think golf).  Participate and learn, or simply watch other Woodhicks as they compete—and cheer on your favorite.
