Programs Planned at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – Several programs have been planned at the Parker Dam State Park, beginning Aug. 16.

Friday, Aug. 16

Scoring Antlers What’s the Point?

8 p.m.—EE Classroom

Who is Boone and Crockett? What do antler scores have to do with conservation? Come out and learn the importance and history behind why we measure or score an animal’s antlers. Then try your hand at scoring after a quick demonstration.  

Saturday, Aug. 17

Tour de Parker

6 p.m.—in front of park office

Join us for a guided bike tour of Parker Dam. This tour will cover roughly four miles of trail and road open to bike riding and highlight some of the history and natural resources that make our park special. Regular and E-bikes welcome. All riders 12 and under must wear a helmet.

Canines of Pa

8:30 p.m. – EE Classroom

Come out and learn about the wild and native relatives to our beloved companions that are found in Pennsylvania and Parker Dam. Get an up-close look at their furs, skulls, and some taxidermy specimens.

Sunday, Aug. 18

Tea & Talk

7 p.m.—Beach House Steps

Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park.  Talk is, as always, whatever you want to talk about concerning the park.  Come prepared with a topic or three.

Monday, Aug. 19

Blue Moon Kayaking

8:15 p.m.—Beach Area

What is a Blue Moon? Come out and join us for a once in a blue moon full moon kayak paddle here on Parker Lake.  During the paddle we will talk about what a blue moon is and explore the lake under the rising moon. Bring your own boat or use one of the park’s kayaks—first come, first served—reserve at the park office 814-765-0630. Those participating will be required to always wear a life vest. You will also need to have a flashlight with you for signaling as well. Experience kayaking in the dark is recommended. Open to ages 12 and up.
