PENFIELD – Several programs have been planned at Parker Dam State Park, beginning Aug. 8.

Thursday, Aug. 8

Little Critters Story Time

10 a.m.—EE Classroom

Come join Park Naturalists for story time and a craft.  The stories and crafts will be centered around wildlife and nature.  Parents are encouraged to attend.  This week’s theme will be Black Bears.

Friday, Aug. 9

Smokey’s Birthday Party

5 p.m. to 7 p.m. —Beach

Join us to help Smokey Bear celebrate his 80th birthday. Join in on a Smokey sandcastle competition, learn about those that help Smokey prevent forest fires, and sing happy birthday to Smokey with all of us here at Parker Dam.

Saturday, Aug. 10

Black Bear Table

1 p.m. to 2 p.m. —Beach House

Learn about one of Pennsylvania’s largest mammals, the Black Bear. Get an up-close look at their skulls, hides, tracks, and learn why Pennsylvania is a great home for them. Learn if you are BearWise when at home and here at the park.

How Many Bears?

4 p.m. —EE Classroom

An activity looking at the carrying capacity of our PA habitat for black bears.  Discover what challenges some bear face by being a bear.  All ages welcome.

On the Trail of PA Black Bears

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Enjoy the shortened version (63 min) of the acclaimed PGC Black Bear video featuring Gary Alt. 

Sunday, Aug. 11

Who’s There When You Aren’t?

Trail Cameras for Wildlife  

3 p.m. —EE Classroom

Have you ever wondered what wildlife uses the same areas as you when you are not around? Come join the Park Naturalist to learn how and why you might want to use trail cameras for wildlife.  Whether you are a beginner or looking to further your trail camera skills, join us for a discussion on settings, different styles of cameras, and tips and tricks for success.  Then tag along with us on a short walk to look for wildlife sign to set a camera on.  This is open to participants of all ages.

Tea & Talk

7 p.m. —Beach House Steps

Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park.  Talk is, as always, whatever you want to talk about concerning the park.  Come prepared with a topic or three—otherwise, Fibonacci.

Monday, Aug. 12

Perseid Meteor Shower Watch

9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.—Beach Area

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets for an evening of watching the night sky for the Perseid Meteor Shower.  Learn the difference between a meteor and a meteorite, comet, etc.
