Houtzdale Inmate Pleads Guilty for His Part in Drug Scheme

CLEARFIELD – During sentencing court on Monday, an inmate of the state prison in Houtzdale pleaded guilty for his part in a scheme to get drugs into the facility.

Cody Alan Ewan, 30, was sentenced by Judge Paul E. Cherry to serve 24 months to six years in state prison for felony criminal use of communication facility and misdemeanor conspiracy/possession of a controlled substance. This new term of incarceration will run consecutive to his current sentence.

The charges stem from an incident on March 17, 2023 when Ewan’s co-defendant, Kayla Ann Schill, 35, of Chambersburg, arrived at the prison with contraband she planned to pass to Ewan.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, officials became aware of the plan because of e-mail messages between the two. In the messages, they discussed her upcoming visit.

After she passed the initial security checkpoint that day, she was “air scanned” by a K9 officer who indicated she had a controlled substance.

In her interview with authorities, she explained she had previously supplied Ewan, her boyfriend, with 100 Suboxone strips. They reportedly discussed bringing in more drugs, which would “relieve their financial issues.”

She allowed investigators to search her vehicle and gave them two letters from Ewan that contained information on how to package and introduce contraband, including the Suboxone strips and synthetic cannabinoids known as K2.

Ewan told police who supplied the drugs to Schill and how much the co-conspirator was to split with him.

When the two folded pieces of white paper and 82 orange strips she brought with her were tested, the paper was negative for controlled substances but the strips were confirmed to contain Suboxone.

Schill is charged in this case with felony contraband, conspiracy/contraband, conspiracy/possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of communication facility, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and conspiracy/possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, as well as misdemeanor intentional possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy/intentional possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and conspiracy/possession of drug paraphernalia.

She is free on $50,000, unsecured bail as her case is still pending a resolution.
