Bellefonte Snaps Clearfield’s Win Streak via Run-Rule

BELLEFONTE — Clearfield Bison baseball came into Monday evening’s game riding a four game win streak, including a 5-4 win over Bellefonte, who they rematched. Bellefonte got their revenge in just five innings before winning 12-1 via run rule.

Elijah Quick took the mound for Clearfield, facing Bellefonte’s Braedyn Kormanic.

Bellefonte’s leadoff hitter Trevor Johnson, who had two homers in their last matchup with Clearfield, led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk after the Bison went down in order in the top half of the inning. An error by Clearfield’s shortstop allowed Peyton Vancas to reach for Bellefonte and make it two on. The Raiders’ pitcher Kormanic got the scoring started with an RBI groundout after Johnson reached third on a wild pitch. Bellefonte’s third baseman Levi Purnell added to the lead with a double to score Vancasand making it a 2-0 game. Back-to-back RBI singles from Oliver Thornburg and Jacob Corman gave Bellefonte a 4-0 lead. Despite having two outs, the Bison first inning bleeding was far from over. Ethan Tomasacci of Bellefonte made it 5-0 with a single. As the order flipped back over to Johnson, the Raiders scored a pair of runs after an error by Clearfield’s leftfielder and the lead moved to 7-0. Vancas reached base again after a double, scoring Johnson, his second run of the inning, and running it up to 8-0. Quick’s day ended after two-thirds of inning, and Hunter Rumsky came in the game for Clearfield. Kormanic singled to put Bellefonte up 9-0 before the inning mercifully ended.

Both teams would go scoreless in the second inning.

In the bottom of the third, Craig Mays took over for the Bison. Johnson was walked for a second time to lead of an inning for the Raiders. Kormanic picked up another RBI after Johnson moved to third on a groundout, making it 10-0 Raiders.

Clearfield’s Anthony Lopez walked, before Christian Welker collected the only hit of the game for the Bison. Both runners advanced a base after a wild pitch from Bellefonte. O’Brian Owens picked up Clearfield’s only RBI on a come backer to the pitcher to score Lopez.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Purnell and Thornburg put two runners on for Bellefonte with a walk and bunt single. Ryan Farley drove in two more Bellefonte runs with a double, which ended up setting the final at 12-1.

Clearfield went scoreless in the top of the fifth so the game ended due to run-rule, and the Bison win streak would end at four.

Clearfield (8-8) will have a day off before playing back-to-back home games versus Punxsutawney and Hollidaysburg Wednesday and Thursday to close out the season.
