BELLEFONTE — The momentum that the Clearfield Lady Bison picked up over the past week with their four game winning streak looked like it would carry into a tough road game at the 12-5 Bellefonte Lady Raiders.
Clearfield scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but it was only a matter of time before the high powered Bellefonte offense would put the game away, eventually winning 11-5 to drop the Lady Bison to 7-9 on the season.
Ruby Singleton started the game off with a double down the left field line off of Bellefonte starting pitcher Carley Clarkson. Madi McBride bunted Singleton over to third and Aevril Hayward walked to put runners on the corners with one out. Hayward stole second before Eve Siegel grounded to the right side to plate Singleton with the game’s first run. Sam Campolong also walked and advanced herself to second while Alexus Green batted. Green continued her hot hitting of late by doubling off of the left field fence to score Hayward and Campolong, giving the Lady Bison the early 3-0 lead.
Freshman starting pitcher kept the home squad off the board in the bottom of the first, while Clarkson ended up keeping the Lady Bison bats at bay over the next five innings with the help of some sterling defensive plays behind her.
The Lady Raiders plated five runs in the second inning, as while down 3-2, Maria Cotter and Ragan Manning hit back-to-back jacks to score three more runs for the home team.
Henry, with the help of some nice defensive plays behind her as well, limited the Lady Riaders to only a single run over their next three at-bats.
However with the rain coming down and Bellefonte clinging to a 6-3 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Raiders essentially put the game away with another 5-run salvo, making it 11-3.
There’s no quit in these Lady Bison though, as they came out swinging in the final inning. scoring two runs and having two runners on when the game ended.
Paige Houser led of the seventh with a single, her second hit of the day. Haley Billotte then beat out an infield single to short to put two runners on with no outs. After an Infield Fly Rule out, McBride hit a comebacker to Clarkson, who promptly deposited it into center field for an error, scoring Houser, while Billotte and MacBride both moved into scoring position. A backwards K on a full count earned Clarkson the second out of the inning. Siegel then singled into the hole at short off the third baseman’s glove to score Billotte. Campolong, who had hit one off the fence earlier in the game, then lined out to centerfielder Cotter, who made several nice plays throughout the game, to end it.
The Lady Bison have a four game slate next week as the regular season will come to a close. They’ll start of the week with a trip to Hollidaysburg to face the Lady Tigers (8-9).
