HYDE — No one would have been surprised if the Clearfield Lady Bison would have a letdown game after their 7-6 walk off win the previous day against Central. Especially after the Somerset Lady Eagles scored in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
That was not the case, as the bats for Clearfield took up right where they left off the previous day when they scored four runs in the last inning. The almost doubled that Wednesday as they scored seven in their first at-bat to take a 7-1 lead and never looked back cruising to a 12-2 Mercy Rule win to up their season record to 7-8.
Hitting machine Ruby Singleton singled on the very first pitch of the day from Somerset starter Brooklynn Thomas. Madi McBride then laid down a perfect bunt to advance Singleton, who had stolen second, to third, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Aevril Hayward then grounded out to third, allowing Singleton to score and tie the game at one. With McBride on second, Eve Siegel singled through the left side to give the Lady Bison a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Sam Campolong followed Siegel with a walk. Siegel and Campolong then moved up during Alexus Green’s at-bat, then Green singled them both in making the score 4-1. Anna Twigg then got the first of her three hits before Paige Houser was hit in the back with a pitch, loading the bases. After a second out was recorded, Singleton hit her school record 33rd career double, clearing the bases and making it 7-1.
The second inning saw the Lady Bison extend their lead to 9-1 after Hayward blooped a double to left to start the inning. Siegel then delivered her second RBI single in as many innings through the left side, making it 8-1. Siegel moved to third on a fielder’s choice, followed by an error, off the bat of Campolong. Green then had her second RBI single of the game as well and the Lady Bison were up 9-1 after two complete innings.
Somerset did score another run in the top of the third inning, but starting pitcher Megan Wisor kept the visitors off the scoreboard otherwise, as she scattered six hits, allowed the two earned runs, walked two, and struck out five in her five innings of work to pick up her third complete game win in a row.
The Lady Bison closed it out with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to set the final.
After an out, Campolong walked off of reliever Ava Baumgardner. Green was plunked and Twigg hit a single to load the bases. Houser singled hard off the third baseman’s glove to make it 11-2 and leave the bases loaded. Pinch hitter Raigan Uncles the singled past short to plate Green and close out the game.
Clearfield, who started the season 0-4 and is 7-4 since, will travel to Bellefonte on Thursday, weather permitting. Bellefonte (12-5) dealt the Lady Bison a 17-3 loss the second game of the season.
