Kushner’s First Varsity Homerun Propels Clearfield to 4th Straight Win

HYDE — The Clearfield Bison baseball team took to the field again after an off day as they played at home taking on Bellefonte, who would be handed their second loss of the season and fall to 14-2. Clearfield won their fourth straight game to improve to 8-7.

Hunter Rumsky took the mound for the Bison, while Bellefonte threw Braedyn Kormanic.

In the top of the first inning, Bellefonte’s Trevor Johnson took the first pitch of the game over the left field wall to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Clearfield’s Cole Bloom hit a single to lead of the bottom of the first, before Christian Welker reached on an error. Hayvin Bumbarger followed with a single to load the bases. O’Brian Owens then hit a single to score Bloom, and the Bison would even the game at one. Rumsky helped himself with an RBI groundout to give Clearfield a 2-1 lead.

Kamden Kushner’s 2-run homer tied the game at four

Ryan Fraley hit a two out single in the top of the second. He reached second on a wild pitch before he scored on an error to even the game at two. Johnson, a Duke commit, came up again and hit his second homerun in the first two innings of the game, making the score 4-2 in favor of Bellefonte. After their 3-run inning in the second, the Raiders wouldn’t put up another run the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the second, Elijah Quick reached on a walk for Clearfield, and Kamden Kushner followed with a homerun over the wall in right-center to tie the game at four.

The bottom of the fourth inning also started with a walk of Quick. Kushner laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Quick all the way to third. Cole Bloom came through with a sacrifice fly to give the Bison a 5-4 lead.

Rumsky would go five innings before Christian Welker came on in relief in the top of the sixth.

The score would remain the same after Welker threw two scoreless innings to earn his second save of the week for Clearfield.

The Bison will look to make it five in a row on the road Thursday at Forest Hills.
