Campolong Grand Slam, Singleton Milestone Highlight Lady Bison Win

HYDE — The Clearfield Lady Bison softball team welcomed the Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devils to the Bison Sports Complex on Monday afternoon. And the Lady Bison played gracious host by spotting their visitors a three runs in the top of the first inning on the strength of three hits, a walk and a fielder’s choice.

From there on out, it was all Lady Bison, as Clearfield ran off 13 unanswered runs on their way to a 13-3 Mercy Rule win that upped their record to 2-5, while dropping Bellwood-Antis to 2-7.

Bison senior Ruby Singleton led off the home half of the first with a single, tying Brooke Cline as the all-time hits leader for the Lady Bison. After an out, sophomore Aevril Hayward singled to center before Eve Siegel reached on an error by the Blue Devil second baseman to load the bases. After a second out, senior Sam Campolong drove a 2-2 pitch over the wall in leftfield for a grandslam to give the Lady Bison a 4-3 lead, that they never relinquished.

After the rough first inning, freshman pitch Joell Henry scattered five hits and shut out Bellwood-Antis the rest of the way.

The Lady Bison added two runs in the third and fourth innings, then put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, the final runs scoring on a two out double down the right field line by Raigan Uncles.

In the scoreless second inning for the Lady Bison, Singleton had an infield single to break the Lady Bison career mark with her 113th hit.

Siegel started things off in the bottom of the third inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice an an error and then scored on Campolong’s fielder’s choice and her fifth RBI of the game.

Hayward led off the fourth inning by reaching on a two base error. She reached third on a wild pitch and scored on an error. Siegel then singled over the second baseman’s head and advanced to second on another Blue Devil error. Siegel scored her third run of the game on a Paige Houser fielder’s choice to make it 8-3.

Singleton started the fifth inning off with her fourth home run of the year. Madi McBride then reached on an infield single before Hayward hit a homerun to center field to make it 11-3. With two outs, Campolong walked, Houser reached on an error, and pinch hitter Allison Fedder also walked to load the bases. That’s when Uncles delivered her double to score Campolong and Houser to end the game.

Clearfield will travel to Spring Mills on Tuesday to face Penns Valley (5-5).
