CURWENSVILLE – For the second time in one week, the Curwensville softball team bested rival Glendale. On Tuesday, the Tide held off the Vikings in a 5-4 nail-biter, and Saturday’s contest finished by a 2-0 difference. Both games saw strong showings in the circle for both squads.
Lady Tide sophomore Addison Siple recorded both wins while the Vikings sent Hannah Simmers to the circle to try to keep the host bats quiet. Siple’s day showcased 16 strikeouts while scattering three hits and waking one. Simmers only allowed four hits, but three of them came in the same inning. Meanwhile, she struck out eight and issued five free passes.
“Our pre-season goals were to split with Glendale.” Leigey said about the Tide. “Winning twice is big for our confidence. They are a very good team, and these were two big stepping stones to the maturity of this team.”
Two of Glendale’s hits led off the first inning, but a pair of strikeouts on either side of a sacrifice bunt stranded Jayden Fry and Caitlyn Rydbom. The only other Viking hit of the day was a two-out double from Madison Peterson in the sixth inning. She was stranded when Siple notched the third strikeout of the inning.
The scoring in the fourth inning opened with a one-out single from sophomore Sydney Simcox. After the second out, Addison Butler’s single rolled into center field. Simcox hesitated slightly after rounding second and slid safely into third. Butler moved to second on a throw to third base. Addison Warren then connected on a 2-0 pitch and drove it hard into right field to pick up the only RBIs of the day.
“Addison (Warren) broke up a perfect game against Claysburg-Kimmel on Thursday,” Leigey reminded about the only hit of the last game this week. “Today, she picked up the big hit to secure the win. I like her confidence at the plate right now.”
Glendale managed only two runners after the Tide took the lead – the Peterson double and an error to open the seventh inning. Curwensville’s only other hit of the day came in the fifth inning as Ava Olosky was stranded after a one-out double.
Curwensville (6-1) will be busy next week with nearly six games on the slate. The Black and Gold travel to Juniata Valley on Monday for a 4:30 contest. On Tuesday, Brockway comes to Coach Andy Evanko Stadium to finish an earlier game before playing the regularly scheduled contest. They travel to Mount Union on Thursday before hosting a double-header with North Star next Saturday.
The Vikings (4-6) Travels to Mount Union on Monday.
