Union Plates 13 to Drop Curwensville

RIMERSBURG — The weather finally let up enough to let baseball teams get back on the diamond, and the Curwensville Golden Tide were eager to get back on the field after having not played in over a week. The return to play meant a trip to face Union/Allegheny-Clarion for a Saturday afternoon matinee.

That trip would mean an early return back. Union would limit the batting output of the Tide, while lighting up the board. In five innings, Union would hand Curwensville a 13-0 loss, their second shutout loss of the season.

The home squad would score in every inning of the game, starting with a three-run slate in the bottom of the first. An RBI-double from Chase Ruth on a liner to right field plated the first run. Two consecutive errors by Curwensville allowed the second run, while an RBI-single by Colbin Elliott brought in the third.

A total of six runs came home in the second, the first coming off another error. Two batters later, a bases-loaded walk to Sebastian Link made it 5-0 with one out. Adrian Schmoll hit another RBI-double for the home squad that would plate three to make it 8-0. The final run came in what can be considered one of the most challenging plays in all of baseball, at any level. With Carter McGarvey at the plate, with a 1-1 count, suddenly Schmoll made a dash for home plate. He would beat the throw home to make it 9-0 before the Tide got out of the inning with a fly out. Still, the 9-0 score after two innings was an uphill climb.

On the opposite side, Union’s Trey Fleming was having a stellar day on the hill. The senior hurler would go the entire game pitching, only yielding three hits on the afternoon, to get the win.

By contrast, Curwensville would end up putting four pitchers on the hill. Lawson Neiswender got the start on the afternoon, but was pulled after two innings after giving up nine runs, five of them earned.

The tenth run came in the third on a sacrifice fly by Fleming, setting up a potential mercy rule. Curwensville’s final time on defense was in the bottom of the fourth, and Union added another three runs on a fielding error that plated two, and a fielder’s choice, setting the final.

Curwensville (0-3) has a three-game slate for the upcoming week starting with a road trip on Tuesday afternoon to face the Williamsburg Blue Pirates. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
