Clearfield’s Collins and Chamberlain Advance; Collins Breaks Wins Record

HERSHEY — During a late of wrestling at Hershey’s Giant Center, Clearfield’s Brady Collins and Carter Chamberlain reached Saturday morning’s consolation semifinals at the PIAA AA State Wrestling Championships.

At 152 pounds, Brady (44-3) defeated Penns Valley’s Ty Watson (38-7) by 4-2 comeback victory to break the Clearfield Bison single season win record, previously held by state champion Sean Owen, who was 43-1 during the 2008-09 season.

Watson scored the opening takedown and took a 2-0 lead into the second period. Collins came off the bottom in the second with a four point move to take the lead heading into the final two minutes. Collins rode Watson the entire third period to eke out the 4-2 win. Watson will head to the seventh place match after placing sixth the previous two years.

Collins will now get a chance to exact a measure of revenge in the consolation semifinals, as he’ll face off with Grove City’s Cody Hamilton (45-3), who defeated Collins in the Northwest Regional final last 4-3 with a late takedown. The winner will advance to the third place match, while the loser will drop to the fifth place match. Collins needs a win to better his placement of fourth from a year ago at 139 pounds.

Chamberlain (34-9) is assured of his highest finish at Hershey, as he was eighth as a sophomore in AAA at 189.

He was dominant in his match with a 4-0 shut out of Bentworth’s Vitali Daniels (40-8). After a scoreless first minute of wrestling, Chamberlain was on bottom to start the second period. He got a reversal about 20 seconds into the period and rode Daniels out to take a 2-0 lead into the final minute. After being ridden for 1:41, Daniels chose neutral to start the third. That strategy backfired when Chamberlain notched a takedown with 44 seconds remaining and once again rode Daniels out to take home the win.

Chamberlain’s consolation semifinal, which gets under way at 9:30 AM Saturday morning, will be against Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close (43-3). Close, who has placed eighth and seventh the past two years was pinned in last year’s dual meet by Chamberlain. The BEA – Clearfield match was snowed out and never made up this past regular season.

Clearfield remains in 19th place in the team standings, after a 44th place finish a year ago. Faith Christian Academy opened up its lead 140-115.5 over runner up Bishop McCort.
