Clearfield Wins District 9 AA Team Wrestling Championship

BRROKVILLE — For the first time ever, the Clearfield Bison wrestlers won a District 9 Class AA Team Wrestling title and earned a trip to this week’s PIAA Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey.

In the championship match at Brookville Area High School Saturday afternoon, the Bison (15-1) finished a 2-0 day on the mat by beating Port Allegany 45-24. In the semifinals, top-seeded Clearfield defeated No. 4 seed St. Marys, 43-20.

Against Port Allegany, the Bison won the first five bouts to get things rolling. Colton Ryan pinned Colton Furgeson in the first period at 133 pounds as did Colton Bumbarger at 139. Ty Aveni’s second-period reversal was all he needed in a 2-0 decision over Aiden Furgeson at 145 and Brady Collins pinned Peyton Stiles in the first period for a 21-0 Bison start.

Port Allegany won four of the next five bouts with the only Bison win coming on Carter Chamberlin’s first-period pin of Juuso Young at 189 pounds.

Port’s top-ranked heavyweight Carson Neely’s pin at heavyweight got the Gators within 27-18 with four bouts to go, but the Bison won three of those to win the title. Xavier Lutz needed just 17 seconds to pin Beau Stauffer at 107, Cash Diehl pinned Ian O’Shea in the third period and Bryndin Chamberlain capped the title celebration with his first-period fall against Isaac Postewait.

The Bison wrestle Thursday at the Giant Center, opening with District 7 runner-up Burgettstown (15-1). Clearfield’s last district dual title came in Class AAA in 2016.

In Saturday’s semifinals, the Bison won nine of 13 bouts against the Flying Dutchmen, seven of them getting bonus points.

With the match starting at 127, the Dutch got one of their wins from Aiden Beimel in an 11-2 major over Chamberlain, but Bison started to reel off some wins after that. Ryan majored Konnor Meyer 12-4 at 133, Bumbarger majored Brody Wehler at 10-2, at 139

Collins teched Tristan Dilley, 18-2, at 152 while Will Domico decisioned Jace Meyer, 3-0, at 160.

Carter Freeland won a 7-3 decision over Grant Jin at 189 and Chamberlain pinned Ethan Ott at 215 and Nick Bailor decked Bryson Tucker at heavyweight.

The Bison got a forfeit win from Xavier Lutz at 107 before Dakota Shugarts won their final bout with a pin of Jack Neil at 114.

In the other semifinal, Port Allegany ended Brookville’s chances at an 11th straight dual title with a 39-27 win.

In the quarterfinal round with Clearfield receiving a bye, Brookville routed Central Clarion 52-21 while St. Marys edged Brockway 35-7 and Port Allegany routed Curwensville, 60-15.

Curwensville’s wins against the Gators came from Alex Murawski’s 6-2 decision over Logan Hurlburt at 189 and forfeit wins at 215 by Trenton Guiher and 107 by Austin Gilliland.

The Tide (8-13) will be on the road Tuesday February 13 when they travel to New Bethlehem to face Redbank Valley (8-8).
