CURWENSVILLE — Everyone that came to Patton Hall on Thursday night felt as though they were in a haze. It wasn’t because they couldn’t see the gymnasium for any reason, but seeing the gym floor was a pleasant sight as the outside air was just as foggy then as it was during the school day. But, the fans inside the gym were ready for the Lady Tide to do battle against the Glendale Lady Vikings.
The visitors did not come onto the court until over half the warm-up time had elapsed, and when they did, they were extremely limited. Only five players dressed for the visitors, but it was enough to compete per rules. It was enough as they would get out to an early lead, and limited the scoring output, handing Curwensville a 47-14 loss, dropping the home squad to 0-15 on the season.
The size advantage was immediately noticed as Glendale’s Madison Peterson and Sophia Leiden worked inside and outside to start the contest, racing out to a quick 13-7 lead after one quarter.
Still, Curwensville battled hard on missed shots, pulling down multiple rebounds, as Brooklynn Price led the Tide with nine boards.
“We have been working really hard at practice when it comes to rebounds, where they need to be and the positioning to get those rebounds,” said Curwensville head coach Dawna Wheeler.
At the same time, the Lady Tide were struggling to get the ball into the hoop after getting some of those rebounds. Curwensville had trouble making shots in the second quarter, as they were limited to just 1-for-8 from the floor, as Glendale took a 21-9 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter ultimately saw the Lady Tide struggles continue as the Lady Vikings would prevent them from making any shot in the entire quarter. Curwensville went 0-for-10 in the third, while Glendale’s Peterson would continue to dominate from the floor. She put up seven points in the quarter, part of her game-high 27 on the night, as Glendale took the 34-9 lead into the final quarter.
The scoring woes stopped as Price got a quick jumper in the paint. Briah Peoples would account for Curwensville’s only three in the game in the final quarter, as she led Curwensville with five points. However, Glendale would push the score officially to the Mercy Rule with just over three minutes remaining, as they played keep away on the clock.
“These girls still battle every game, and they work so hard. We don’t quit no matter what,” Wheeler said. “Our big thing right now, as it bit us tonight once more, is we have to find a way to get those shots to fall.”
Curwensville has two games slated for next week, both at home, as they will start the week against Bucktail on Monday night. Tip-off will be at 6:30 p.m.
