HYDE — With only three seniors on the squad, the pre-match Senior Recognition didn’t last all that long, but neither did the match as the Clearfield Bison ran their record to 12-1 on the season with a 48-11 win over their longtime District 9 rivals from the north.
The Bison exacted a measure of revenge against the Flying Dutch of St. Marys, who derailed the Bison’s undefeated regular season last year with a 39-24 win in the Dutch Oven.
The Bison won eight of the 11 contested weight classes, with the seniors going 3-0, and picked up two forfeits as well.
Cash Diehl (17-7) picked up a 6-0 shut out win at 121 over Jayce Walter (18-12), with a big 4-point move to start the match being the difference maker, to get the Bison the early lead.
The visitors tied the match at 3-3 when St. Marys’ two-time state qualifier Aiden Beimel (30-4) beat Bryndin Chamberlain (14-10) at 127 on the strength of three hard earned takedowns.
Senior Adam Rougeux (18-8) gave the Bison a lead they would never relinquish when he reversed and pinned Konner Meyer (11-11) after giving up the opening takedown at 133.
At 139, Clearfield’s Colton Ryan (21-8) and St. Marys’ Brody Wehler (6-15) were in a back and forth match that wasn’t decided until Ryan scored the final points of the match in the third period with a reversal that led to an 8-6 win.
Jaden Wehler (27-5) cut the Bison lead to 12-8 when he tech falled Colton Bumbarger (15-8) at 145.
Ty Aveni (22-10) started a three match win streak for the Bison at 152 when, after a scoreless first period, he pinned Tristan Dilley (17-11) from the top position near the end of the second period.
The second senior out for the Bison was Will Domico at 160. Domico (17-6) was dominant in his 6-1 decision over Jace Meyer (10-10) to up the home team’s lead up to 21-8.
The feature bout of the night happened at 172, when Brady Collins of Clearfield moved up to face the much bigger Andrew Wolfganger. Wolfganger (28-5) picked up his 100th career win in his last match, while Collins entered the match with 97 career wins. Collins (25-2) notched three takedowns in the first two periods and held on for a 7-4 win to set his career record at 98-13.
The 189 pound match was the highest scoring of the match as Clearfield’s Hunter Ressler (12-13) and the Dutch’s Grant Jin (14-12) traded takedowns and escapes over the first two periods, with Ressler taking an 8-7 lead into the final period. A Jin escape tied it, then a late takedown and nearfall won it for Jin 12-8, giving the visitors their final, points as the score reached 30-11.
The final senior to take the mat for the Bisons was 215 pounder Carter Chamberlain (16-4) who made short work of Ethan Ott (11-8) with a pin at the 2:04 mark after building up an 11-2 lead.
At 285, Clearfield’s Nick Bailor (10-11) fought back from a 5-0 first period deficit and used his considerable size advantage in the second period when he reversed and pinned Bryson Tucker (6-8) after just 24 seconds.
The scoring was closed out when Xavier Lutz (13-11) at 107 and Dakota Shugarts (12-9) at 114 received forfeits, setting the final at 48-11.
The Bison will be back in action this weekend at the 28-team Thomas Chevrolet Tournament, which Clearfield placed third in the team race last year, at Bedford High School.
