PHILIPSBURG — One common occurrence that continues during the Christmas break for the Curwensville Lady Tide is being part of the Philipsburg-Osceola Holiday Tournament. It’s a theme that continues as the 2023 year draws to a close, as the Lady Tide competed both Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Philipsburg to finish off the first part of their schedule.
Night one was a contest against the host Lady Mounties, and it was one that was one-sided from the outset. Curwensville’s struggles to start the year continued as P-O held its own in a 56-32 loss for Curwensville.
The Lady Tide did not have a bad game, but were outmatched against the deep roster of P-O. After falling behind by a few possessions in the first quarter, Curwensville’s offense improved in the second eight minutes of play, pulling closer but still could not cut into the lead. The Lady Mounties held a 30-17 advantage into the second half, and continued their strong game through the latter part of the night.
No one had a better game than Philipsburg-Osceola’s Lily Warlow, as she dropped a game-high 22 points on the night, with Khendyl Sharrer pulling in another 12. Curwensville saw everyone take time on the court, with Addison Warren scoring the most points for the Lady Tide, finishing with nine. The big struggle for Curwensville all night was at the foul line, as they would only shoot 15-for-26 at game’s end.
The Tide would get the early tip one day later, as they faced off with a familiar foe in the consolation game against the Moshannon Valley Lady Damsels.

The second half of the tournament was not much of a consolation for Curwensville as they would struggle mightily against the Damsels, falling in a lop-sided contest, 60-18, that finished under the Mercy Rule clock.
Despite keeping things close through one quarter, Curwensville’s offense went flat in the second quarter, and never recovered.
By contrast, Moshannon Valley went off once they got in rhythm, as they took a 26-10 lead into halftime and had a 44-14 advantage through three. By then the starters for the Damsels got some rest, as a trio for Moshannon Valley made it into double figures. Ella Berg led all scoring with 18 points, with Maddie McCoy adding in another 15 and Riley Wharton adding in another 10. Natalie Wischuck led Curwensville with five points.
After the long start to the year on the road, Curwensville (0-8) will get a week of rest to get back in the gym for practice. What is a benefit for the Lady Tide is that, for the first time since the season-opener on December 6, they will play inside Patton Hall. The month-long gap between home games will end on Friday, January 5, when they play host to the Lady Rovers of Brockway. Tip-off will be at 6:30 p.m.
