Bison Head into Christmas Break Undefeated

HYDE — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team thrashed the visiting Tyrone Golden Eagles 50-21 on Thursday night inside the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium to head into the two week Christmas/New Year break with a 6-0 record. They dropped Tyrone to 4-6 on the year.

The evening started at 107 and the hosts had a 24-0 lead after three minutes had run off of the gymnasium clock.

The Bison received forfeits at 107, 114, and 127….all sandwiched around a Dakota Shugarts (6-4) fall in 1:47 at 121. Receiving the forfeits were Xavier Lutz (6-4), David Magnuson (3-4), and Bryndin Chamberlain (6-3) respectively.

Tyrone got on the board via forfeit at 133, as the Bison are still missing two starters due to sickness and illness amongst the lightweights.

Up 24-6, the Bison didn’t let off the gas as they got three falls in a row in the middleweights to build up an insurmountable 42-6 lead.

Colton Ryan (7-4) was dominant in his match at 139, building up a 13-0 lead early in the final period before recording the fall in 4:56.

Ty Aveni only needed 17 seconds to get the fall

At 145, Colton Bumbarger (6-5) stacked his guy in 1:44 before Ty Aveni (8-4) didn’t break a sweat as he had the quickest fall of the night, the match lasting all of 17 seconds.

Will Domico (6-0) remained undefeated on the year on the strength of seven takedowns in a 19-4 tech fall in 5:31 to expand the lead to 47-6.

The feature match of the night was at 172 where Bison standout Brady Collins bumped up to meet Tyrone’s Kyle Scott. Collins (10-0), a PIAA AA fourth place finisher a year ago, had two takedowns in the opening period against Scott (15-2), a PIAA state qualifier a year ago, and was never in trouble in his 7-2 win.

Brady Collins remained undefeated on the season

Down 50-6, the Golden Eagles won the last three bouts to make the final score somewhat respectable at 50-21.

Two time state qualifier Braden Ewing (15-1) picked up his 92nd career win at 285 as she closes in on the century mark. Andrew Weaver raised his record to 14-3 on the year at 189 when he edged Bison Carter Freeland, making just his second appearance of the season, 6-5. And Richard Rawlings used his near 40-pound weight advantage to pick up a fall at 215.

The Bison are now off until the New Year when they’ll compete in the Laurel Highland Athletic Conference tournament at Tyrone High School on January 5 and 6.

In the preliminary match the Clearfield Junior High team won an exciting match 36-30 that came down to the final bout.
