Clearfield Bison in Second Place at Top Hat

WILLIAMSPORT — Despite having two potential starters out and only filling 12 of the 13 weight classes, the Clearfield Bison wrestling team is off to a hot start at their annual trek to the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament at Williamsport High School.

The Bison sit in second place in the 25-team field. District 6 AAA power Central Mountain leads the hotly contested race with 68.5 points. The Bison follow with 65.5 points, just edging out Saucon Valley’s 65. Close behind are perennial state powers Easton and Northampton, both with 60.

Nine of Clearfield’s 12 scoring team members reached the quarterfinals, which will start Saturday morning’s action.

A trio of top seeds – Cash Diehl at 121, Brady Collins at 160, and Carter Chamberlain at 215 lead the way, while number three Colton Ryan at 139, number five Ty Aveni at 152, number six Bryndin Chamberlain at 127, number seven Nick Bailor at 285, and number eight Coton Bumbarger at 145 each reached the quarters. So did 133 pounder Adam Rougeux.

Still alive in the wrestlebacks are 107 pounder Xavier Lutz, 114 pounder Dakota Shugarts at 114, and Hunter Ressler at 172.

Freshman Dave Magnuson, also at 114, went 0-2 Friday night.
